Malakoplakia is a rare form of chronic granulomatous inflammation in mammals, and usually affects the urinary tract in humans. In this report, we present a case of granulomatous nephritis consistent with malakoplakia in a 4-year-old male cynomolgus monkey. Gross examination showed that the kidney was markedly enlarged and adhered to the surrounding organs. Histology showed that there was diffus...
Malakoplakia is a rare pseudotumoral inflammatory disease known to affect immunocompromised subjects. We report a 4-year-old boy with malakoplakia of colon who was diagnosed with celiac disease in late infancy; despite aggressive nutritional and medical management for celiac disease, symptoms did not resolve. His nitro-blue-tetrazolium test was compatible with chronic granulomatous disease. In ...
SummaryAn unusual case of malakoplakia of the cervical lymph nodes in a patient with bony metastasis from prostrate cancer is reported. An 80-year-old patient with metastatic prostatic cancer presented with bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy, and a hard cervical mass in the left supraclavicular region. Biopsy of the lymph gland revealed the presence of malakoplakia, with no evidence of metastat...
Malakoplakia is an unusual inflammatory disease with uncertain pathogenesis affecting any organ in the body, but predominantly genitourinary tract, with specific predilection to the bladder. We report a rare case of isolated malakoplakia of the urachus in a 29-year-old male patient who presented with lower urinary tract symptoms without any hematuria. Investigations revealed sterile pyuria with...
Malakoplakia, first described by Michaelis and Gutmann in 1902 [1], occurs mainly in the genitourinary tract (60% of cases), and less frequently in the gastrointestinal tract (10% of cases) [2]. Although the pathogenesis of malakoplakia is not completely understood, the disease may be considered the result of an impairment of the mononuclear phagocyte and immunoregulatory effector system [3]. T...
Malakoplakia is a rare disease with undefined etiology that has been almost exclusively reported in urology and pathology journals. We are presenting a case of colonic malakoplakia in an I8-year old young man who was referred to us with a four-year history of intermittent rectorrhagia. The pathological examination of the endoscopically resected specimen revealed pathognomonic features of ma...
The clinical and pathological features of a case of malakoplakia of the adrenal gland occurring in a woman with Escherichia coli infection are described. This lesion mimicked a neoplasm, the true diagnosis only being revealed by histological examination. The light and electron microscopic features are described and it is suggested that malakoplakia is due to an abnormal macrophage response to E...
Nephrolithic non-functioning kidney and malakoplakia are major health problems. Kidney function cannot be fulfilled and also this leads to a high risk of development of urothelial neoplasm. We report herein a case of urothelial carcinoma concomitant with malakoplakia in non-functioning nephrolithic kidneys.
Malakoplakia typically affects the bladders of immunocompromised adults who have defective intracellular killing of Escherichia coli. Renal malakoplakia is rare in children and generally has a good outcome. In the case presented, however, it caused end stage renal failure in a 5 year old girl. The management dilemmas surrounding renal transplantation are highlighted.
