Phylogenetic relationships of 69 neonatal meningitis Escherichia coli strains isolated worldwide were studied. Restriction fragment length polymorphism of rrn operons (rrn RFLP) in these isolates was compared with that of the 72 strains of the ECOR reference collection. Distributions of K1 antigen, of polymerase chain reaction-detected ibe10 gene, pap, afa, sfa/foc, hly, and aer operons, and of...

Some of the main features of neonatal meningitis, studied in a defined population of infants, are reviewed. The incidence rate was twenty-six cases per 100 000 live-births. The case fatality rate was 43%. Gram-negative intestinal bacilli were the commonest infecting organisms. Streptococci accounted for an important minority of cases. It is stressed that neonatal meningitis usually presents as ...

OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalent bacterial agents of neonatal meningitis and their antibiotic susceptibility in a referral intensive care unit in Assir Central Hospital, Saudi Arabia, during the years 1993-1998. METHODS Records of newborn infants with positive cerebrospinal fluid culture during the period were retrospectively studied. RESULTS There were 1473 nursery admissions, of which...

Neonatal meningitis is an illness characterized by inflammation of the meninges and occurring within the birth and the first 28 days of life. Invasive infection by Streptococcus pneumoniae, meningitis and sepsis, in neonate is associated with prolonged rupture of membranes; maternal colonization/illness, prematurity, high mortality and 50% of cases have some form of disability. For this purpose...

The Cronobacter sakazakii clonal lineage defined as clonal complex 4 (CC4), composed of nine sequence types, is associated with severe cases of neonatal meningitis. To date, only closely related C. sakazakii sequence type 4 (ST4) strains have been sequenced. C. sakazakii strain 8399, isolated from a case of neonatal meningitis, was sequenced as the first non-ST4 C. sakazakii strain.

Neonatal meningococcal meningitis (NMM) is rare, although early onset and late onset forms of meningococcal sepsis in neonates have been reported. The outcome of meningococcal disease can be fatal and depends on the innate immune system, age, serogroups, pre-existing antibodies, and other unknown host factors. The presentation of NMM differs from that in children and adolescents and may present...

Abstract Introduction Salmonellosis is an important public health problem throughout the world. Salmonella meningitis is an unusual manifestation of salmonellosis and remains a threat to children below 2 years of age. Young children especially infants and immunocompromised adults are particularly at higher risk of acquiring this bacteria. The disease has a poor prognosis and is associated with ...

This report describes a case of neonatal bacteraemia and meningitis due to Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus. Based on the identification kit results, this species may have been reported as Streptococcus bovis or S. bovis biotype II. The accurate identification of this organism is mandatory for evaluating the aetiology of neonatal meningitis.

There are few data available from large, prospective, population-based neonatal surveillance studies. One of the earliest regional studies in the UK showed an incidence of neonatal bacterial meningitis of 0.5/1,000 live births over the years 1947–1960. Nearly 10 years later (1969–1973), a retrospective study of acute bacterial meningitis in the North West Metropolitan region reported a lower in...
