For decades, performance has driven the high-end computing (HEC) community. However, as highlighted in recent exascale studies that chart a path from petascale to exascale computing, power consumption is fast becoming the major design constraint in HEC. Consequently, the HEC community needs to address this issue in future petascale and exascale computing systems. Current scientific benchmarks, ...

We have examined the effect of the virulent Leptospira interrogans strain Teramo, serotype icterohemorrhagiae, on the adherence of human neutrophilic polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) to cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HEC). Selective pretreatment of HEC with intact or sonicated leptospires caused a dose- and time-dependent increase of HEC-PMN adhesion (13.2% +/- 2.5% adherenc...

Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is used as a neutral excipient in microbicides used against sexually transmitted pathogens. However, HEC inhibits the infection of cervical epithelial cells by Chlamydia trachomatis at pH 5 in a concentration-dependent manner. At pH 7, infection is inversely dependent on the concentration of HEC, possibly due to pH-dependent calcium sequestration.

The in vitro interaction of human endothelial cells (HEC) and polymers with different wettabilities in culture medium containing serum was investigated. Optimal adhesion of HEC generally occurred onto moderately wettable polymers. Within a series of cellulose type of polymers the cell adhesion increased with increasing contact angle of the polymer surfaces. Proliferation of HEC occurred when ad...

Epilepsy, a common neurological disorder, is characterized by the occurrence of spontaneous recurrent epileptiform discharges (SREDs). Acquired epilepsy is associated with long-term neuronal plasticity changes in the hippocampus resulting in the expression of spontaneous recurrent seizures. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and characterize endogenous epileptiform activity in hippocampal...

Human endothelial cells (HEC) suspended in a culture medium containing 20% human serum (CMS) adhere and spread on(to) moderately wettable polymers, such as tissue culture polystyrene (TCPS). We have previously shown that serum derived-fibronectin, which is a cell adhesion promoting protein, has a high affinity for TCPS, but that the amount of fibronectin which adsorbed from CMS was relatively s...

The adsorption kinetics of hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) on silica and relaxations in adsorbed HEC layers were probed using total internal reflectance fluorescence and near-Brewster reflectivity. Like many random-coil polymers, HEC was found to adsorb at the transport-limited rate. Relaxations occurred at nearly constant interfacial mass when HEC layers were exposed to aqueous solvent, causing th...

Insulin plays an important role in regulating the partitioning of nutrients to the mammary gland, particularly in lactating ruminants fed concentrate-based diets. There is evidence that the nutritional status of the animals might also affect their response to insulin. This is largely untested in early lactating ruminants fed fresh forage. To investigate nutritional effects on insulin response, ...

The interaction of L-selectin expressed on lymphocytes with sulfated sialomucin ligands such as CD34 and GlyCAM-1 on high endothelial venules (HEV) of lymph nodes results in lymphocyte rolling and is essential for lymphocyte recruitment. HEC-GlcNAc6ST-deficient mice lack an HEV-restricted sulfotransferase with selectivity for the C-6 position of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc). HEC-GlcNAc6ST-/- an...

Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) was studied as corrosion inhibitor for mild steel and aluminium in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution using weight loss and electrochemical techniques. The results revealed that HEC inhibited corrosion of mild steel and aluminium in sulphuric acid environment. Inhibition efficiency was found to depend on concentration of the inhibitor. Impedance results revealed that HEC was adso...
