West Nile virus (WNV) has emerged in recent years in temperate regions of Europe and North America, presenting a threat to both public and animal health. The most serious manifestation of infection is fatal encephalitis in humans and horses, as well as mortality in certain domestic and wild birds. A recent development in the epizootiology of this mosquito-borne flavivirus was the occurrence of ...
Viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD) among domestic and wild rabbits and European brown hares have been observed in most of the Federal states of Germany. Acute outbreaks of viral haemorrhagic disease are most prevalent in small, fancy domestic rabbitries, with mortality varying between 5 and 90%, while mostly sporadic losses due to VHD are seen among wild rabbits. In hares, accumulated losses from...
Rats trapped from 14 locations in Baltimore, Maryland, were shown to have antibody to Hantavirus. Antibody prevalence rates were higher in residential locations than in parks. Infected rats were obtained continuously over a six-year period from 1980-1985 at five locations, indicating the enzootic nature of this infection in urban rats in the United States. Prevalence of antibody and geometric m...
Effective locust and grasshopper control is crucial as invasions have seriously threatened crops food security since ancient times. However, the preponderance of chemical insecticides, effective widely used today, increasingly criticized a result their adverse effects on human health environment. Alternative biological methods are being actively sought to replace pesticides. Nosema locustae (Sy...
Shih-Ling Huang, Wei-Cheng Chen, Mei-Chuan Shei, I-Chiu Liao and Shiu-Nan Chen (1999) Studies on epizootiology and pathogenicity of Staphylococcus epidermidis in Tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) cultured in Taiwan. Zoological Studies 38(2): 178-188. This paper describes the epizootiology of a disease of tilapia with clinical signs that include white nodules and microscopic granulomatous formations. D...
West Nile virus (WNV) epizootiology was monitored from 2002 through 2005 in the area surrounding Grand Forks, North Dakota. Mosquitoes were tested for infection, and birds were surveyed for antibodies. In 2003, WNV was epidemic; in 2004, cool temperatures precluded WNV amplification; and in 2005, immunity in passerines decreased, but did not preclude, WNV amplification.
Thottapalayam virus (TPMV) has been placed in the genus Hantavirus of the family Bunyaviridae by virtue of its morphologic features and overall genetic similarities to well-characterized rodentborne hantaviruses. This virus has been isolated from the Asian house shrew (Suncus murinus); however, whether TPMV is naturally harbored by an insectivore host or represents spillover from a rodent reser...
