Objectives: In the present study, Pediococcus acidilactici Ch-2 isolated from Chuli has been evaluated for its probiotic potential and its ability to produce bioactive compounds. Methodology: Isolation was done on MRS agar followed by the safety assessment of isolates. Isolates were screened on the basis of their antagonistic potential against pathogenic bacteria. Probiotic attributes of screen...

Lactic acid bacteria have been used for many years as natural bio preservatives in fermented foods and are also believed to have beneficial health effects on the host. However selection of strain is an important criteria which is mainly based on evaluating the physiological properties of the strain. In this study, lactic acid bacteria were isolated from various dairy, non-dairy and human source...

OBJECTIVES Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) has a poor prognosis and its aetiology is inadequately understood. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of bile may provide insights into the pathogenesis of CCA and help identify novel diagnostic biomarkers. The aim of this study was to compare the chemical composition of bile from patients with CCA with that of bile from patients with benign biliary diseas...

More than 90% of the surviving cells of Escherichia coli NCSM were injured after freezing in water at -78 C. Injury was determined by the ability of cells to form colonies on Trypticase soy agar with yeast extract but not on violet red-bile agar and deoxycholate-lactose agar. Exposure of the injured cells to Brilliant Green-bile broth and lauryl sulfate broth prevented subsequent colony formati...

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the bile ducts with limited therapeutic options except liver transplantation. Reliable biomarkers to predict the disease course are unavailable, and currently employed disease activity scores such as the Mayo risk score (MRS) have limitations. The present study aims to evaluate biliary calprotectin as a marker of disease ...

Lactic acid bacteria were isolated from piglets and chicken and characterized. Lactic acid bacteria showing resistance to low pH and bile, adhesion to intestinal epithelium cells, and the inhibition of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. were identified as Lactobacillus acidophilus. L. acidophilus PF01 survived for 2 h in MRS broth adjusted to pH 2. L. acidophilus CF07 was less resistant than ...

Methicillin (oxacillin)-resistant staphylococci (MRS) have emerged as major clinical and epidemiological pathogens, and there have been frequent reports of MRS infections in the veterinary field. The MRSA-Screen latex agglutination test (Denka Seiken Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) was compared with an oxacillin agar screen test, MIC determination, and mecA PCR assay, the "gold standard." In an analys...

Lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria were screened of their ability to ferment fructooligosaccharides (FOS) on MRS agar. Of 28 strains of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria examined, 12 of 16 Lactobacillus strains and 7 of 8 Bifidobacterium strains fermented FOS. Only strains that gave a positive reaction by the agar method reached high cell densities in broth containing FOS.

Bile peptone broth and alkaline peptone water (pH 8.5) were examined as enrichment media for the isolation of Plesiomonas shigelloides from stools, with salmonella-shigella agar as the isolation medium. After 423 parallel examinations in two different experiments, bile peptone broth enrichment for 24 h was observed to be six times more effective (P less than 0.01) than direct plating alone on s...
