Urethritis is one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. The aim of this study was to detect common bacterial causes of urethritis in men by Gram stain, culture and multiplex PCR.185 male patients who presented at the Skin and venereal clinic of the Dhaka Medical College, Bangladesh with clinical symptoms suggestive of urethritis were enrolled in this s...

The varied pressures required for disruption of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and other species of Neisseria when the Sorvall-Ribi refrigerated cell fractionator is used in the preparation of cell walls and cellular protoplasm are reported. Optimal disruption pressure for the gonococcus was considerably less than that required for other members of the genus Neisseria. Pressures varied from 8,000 psi fo...

Multidrug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a top threat to public health. In November 2015, UCLA Health introduced a rapid gyrase A (gyrA) genotypic assay for prediction of Neisseria gonorrhoeae susceptibility to ciprofloxacin. We found a significant reduction in ceftriaxone use with a concomitant increase in targeted therapy.

During a 12-month period 285 isolates of Neisseria species, other than Neisseria gonorrhoeae, were cultured from patients attending the Department of Venereology, Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh. There were eight patients in whom genitourinary or rectal isolates of Neisseria meningitidis or Neisseria catarrhalis were found. Differences between data from our series and from previous reports are discu...

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a common sexually transmitted pathogen that significantly impacts female fertility, neonatal health, and transmission of HIV worldwide. N. gonorrhoeae usually causes localized inflammation of the urethra and cervix by inducing production of IL-1beta and other inflammatory cytokines. Several NLR (nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich repeat) proteins are implicated in ...

We compared the Phadebact Gonococcus Test with conventional methods in identifying 210 strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Of these, 209 strains were correctly identified (99.5%).

Here, we report the draft genome assemblies of 14 azithromycin-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae clinical isolates, representing the first such strains identified in Ireland. Among these isolates are the first reported highly resistant strains (MIC >256 mg/liter), which both belonged to the ST1580 sequence type.

Gonorrhea may become untreatable due to the spread of resistant or multidrug-resistant strains. Cefixime-resistant gonococci belonging to sequence type 1407 have been described worldwide. We report the genome sequence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae strain G2891, a multidrug-resistant isolate of sequence type 1407, collected in Italy in 2013.
