Clinically can occur as an acute life-threatening disease, with lung, brain and skin being commonly affected. Nocardiosis is a rare but well-established opportunistic infection. We are presenting two cases of Nocardiosis diagnosed in the microbiology laboratory, one in an immuno-competent elderly patient and the other in a immunocompromised patient with AIDS. The first case was of pulmonary Nocardiosis which was caused by the Nocardia asteroides complex and concomitant infections with Staphylococcus au...

A case of pulmonary nocardiosis is reported in a patient with malignant lymphoma and hypoimmunoglobuliwmia. The nocardiosis initially appeared as a dense infiltration in the right qper lobe, subsequently as bilateral long infiltrations. Nocardia asteroides was found in infralaryngeal secretion obtained by transtracheal aspiration. Treatment with sulfadine, lrimethoprim, and sulfamethoxazole (Se...

Pulmonary nocardiosis is a rare disease, which mainly affects immunocompromised hosts such as uncontrolled diabetics; HIV patients; and patients on immunosuppressive therapies such as anticancer drugs, systemic steroids, and transplant recipients. The diagnosis is often missed and delayed, resulting in inappropriate treatment and thus higher mortality. We are reporting a case of pulmonary nocar...

A case of a localized testicular abscess due to Nocardia asteroides in a patient on immunosuppressive therapy for a myeloproliferative disorder is reported. Subsequent fatal dissemination of the infection to the prostate, lungs, and liver occurred. This represents the second reported case of nocardiosis of the testis. Extrapulmonary forms of nocardiosis must be recognized so that appropriate tr...

A review of all cases of nocardiosis in a large hospital in South Florida over the last 6 years was conducted. There were 25 cases of nocardiosis and 76% of them were also infected with HIV. Of the HIV infected patients, all of them had CD4 counts less than 100 cells/mm(3) and most cases were localized in the lungs.

An 86-year-old woman with a 6-year history of bronchiectasis and recurrent pneumonia in the right lung presented to our hospital several weeks' bloody sputum. Imaging studies showed ground-glass infiltrative opacities lung, Nocardia species were repeatedly isolated on sputum culture testing. Genetic testing identified wallacei, which was resistant sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim. Therefore, patie...

Ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) syndrome (EAS) associated with nocardiosis is rare, and little information is available regarding its clinical characteristics. In this study, the case of a 35-year-old male patient who showed significant cushingoid features and had a cough with yellow phlegm for 1 month is described. Pulmonary computed tomography (CT) scanning and 18F-fluorodeoxygluco...

BACKGROUND Nocardiosis primarily occurs in the setting of immunocompromising conditions. However, it may also occur in immunocompetent patients. We described computed tomography features of pulmonary nocardiosis and compared immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. MATERIAL/METHODS CT images of 25 patients (Mean age of 39.5 years; 76% male) with pulmonary nocardiosis proved by bronchoa...
