The proposed design of a fuel pellet containing liquid 3He enclosed in a spherical Be shell of 300 μm thickness and overcoated with D2 solid appears to be adequate for fueling large size d/3He tokamaks. Smaller pellets of this design could be used for near-term experiments. The pellet fabrication should be simple and the components are non-radioactive.

Abstract Nuclear fuel performance modeling and simulation are critical tasks for nuclear design optimization safety analysis under normal transient conditions. Fuel is a complicated phenomenon that involves thermal, mechanical, irradiation mechanisms requires special multiphysics modules. In this study, model was developed using the COMSOL Multiphysics platform. The performed 2D axis-symmetric ...

Yttria stabilised zirconia (YSZ) inert matrix fuel (IMF) fabricated at PSI and irradiated 3 years in the Halden Material Test Reactor (HBWR) since 2000, has been examined by Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) after irradiation and compared with data gained for the unirradiated material. The examined pellet cross-section was estimated to have an equiva...

Abstract. After several years in the reactor core, irradiated nuclear fuel is handled and subsequently stored for a few under water next to achieve thermal cooling decay of very short-lived radionuclides. Thereafter, it might be sent dry-cask interim storage before final disposal deep geological repository. Here, spent (SNF) subject series physicochemical phenomena which are concern integrity c...

It is expected that advanced fuels be employed in the second generation of nuclear fusion reactors. Theoretical calculations show that in such a fuel, a high plasma temperature about 100 keV is a requisite for reaction rate improvement of nuclear fusion. However, creating such a temporal condition requires a more powerful driver than we have today. Here, introducing an optimal fuel configuratio...

Nuclear fuel assembly consists of large number of components. In a typical 500 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water (PHWR) fuel assembly consists of 1655 components in form of pellets, tubes, spacer pads , bearing pads, endcaps and endplates. As nuclear fuel has to perform under severe operating conditions, customers insist for 100 % inspection of all these components. Human based visual inspection for ...

There is growing use of wood pellet and wood chip boilers in the UK. Elsewhere fatalities have been reported, caused by carbon monoxide poisoning following entry into wood pellet storage areas. The aim of this work was to obtain information on how safely these two fuels are being stored in the UK. Site visits were made to six small-scale boiler systems and one large-scale pellet warehouse, to a...
