BACKGROUND Psoas abscess complicating tuberculous spondylitis is a rare morbidity in extrapulmonary tuberculosis. There are no established guidelines for evaluating the clinical response of psoas abscess. Although several studies have shown that positron emission tomography-computed tomography with 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose can play a potential role in diagnosing multifocal tuberculosis and monit...
General medical conditions are an important part of the differential diagnosis in athletes presenting with pain or injury. A psoas abscess is a collection of pus in the iliopsoas muscle compartment and is a rare cause of hip, low back, or groin pain. Psoas abscesses may have significant morbidity and mortality, as 20% progress to septic shock. Presenting symptoms are generally nonspecific and t...
A 63-year-old man with diabetes presented with a twoday history of fever and left flank pain. A physical examination revealed hypotension, tachycardia and left lower abdominal tenderness. Laboratory tests showed leukocytosis with bandemia and metabolic acidosis. A plain abdominal film showed an outpouching left psoas shadow (Picture 1, arrows). Contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography re...
The formation of fistulae is a recognised complication of diverticulitis. This case report describes sigmoid diverticulitis presenting as a right psoas abscess with a colocutaneous fistula. The report highlights the role of appropriate imaging and a high index of suspicion in anyone presenting with a discharging lumbar abscess, especially when the focus of infection may be from a contra-lateral...
Psoas abscess in neonates and infants are rare. Primary psoas abscesses are said to be more common in young children. Limping, fever and abdominal pain has been described to be the way psoas abscesses usually present. The authors describe the unusual presentation and successful treatment of a young child with a unilateral psoas abscess secondary to advanced spondylodiscitis.
Abscess formation in perforated diverticulitis is most commonly confined to the pelvis, with other intraperitoneal and extraperitoneal locations rarer literature. Presented here case of a 63-year-old male who was diagnosed which manifested multiple intra- extra-abdominal abscesses. These were identified on abdominopelvic computed tomography include presacral abscess, bilateral psoas abscesses, ...
A psoas muscle abscess is a relatively uncommon condition that can present with vague clinical features. With the decreasing prevalence of tuberculosis, psoas abscesses of tuberculous origin are currently rare in developed countries, but are typically caused by tuberculosis of the spine. Here, an unusual case of a psoas abscess secondary to renal tuberculosis in a middle-aged woman is presented...
A 76 year old woman developed a psoas abscess from vascular seeding of an infected subclavian venous catheter. The presentation was insidious and diagnosis delayed. Despite adequate surgical drainage, the case proved to be fatal. Venous catheters should be regarded as a potential source of septicaemia and occult abscess formation.
Crohns disease is characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation and not rarely by extraintestinal manifestations. Psoas abscess and fistula is a rare complication of Crohns disease, which is sometimes difficult to diagnose in the early stage. We describe the case of a 22-year-old male patient with Crohns disease who presented to us with difficulty in walking and pain in the area of the ri...
Psoas abscess is a rare condition where infection spreads from a nearby or distant septic focus to the psoas sheath. The causative bacterial organisms at distal sites reach the psoas via lymphatic or hematogenous spread, whereas infection from nearby sites that include the urinary system reaches the psoas directly. There are few reports that account for bacterial infection after endourological ...
