We calculate the pulse compression in a tapered microstructure optical fiber with four layers of holes. We show that the primary limitation on pulse compression is the loss due to mode leakage. As a fiber's diameter decreases due to the tapering, so does the air-hole diameter, and at a sufficiently small diameter the guided mode loss becomes unacceptably high. For the four-layer geometry we con...

Since the inception of the laser, pulse duration has been continuously decreased by the use of a variety of techniques: Q-switching, mode-locking, and pulse compression. We would like to present a new technique based on the addition of laser sub-harmonic, ALS, that allows the production of a single-cycle pulse with single-femtosecond pulse duration. This simple technique takes advantage of the ...

A new effect appears in femtosecond optical pulse compression, using single-mode fibers, that we describe as optical wave breaking. In the fiber, frequency-shifted light in the leading and trailing edges of a pulse overtakes unshifted light in the pulse tails. Mixing of these overlapping frequency components generates sidelobes on the pulse spectrum. The effect often leads to computational inst...

Numerical simulations show that, because of the spatiotemporal coupling implied by the multidimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation, self-focusing of ultrashort optical pulses can lead to pulse compression even in the normal-dispersion regime of a nonlinear Kerr medium. We show how this coupling can be further exploited to control the compression by use of spatial phase modulation. Both the ...

An optical-fibre based pulse compressor for gain-switched DFB laser pulses has been optimised using a systematic procedure based on the initial complete characterisation of the laser pulses, followed by numerical simulations of the pulse propagation in different types of fibre to determine the required lengths for optimum compression. Using both linear and nonlinear compression techniques, an o...

A practical method for generating high-quality optical pulses of sub-picosecond pulse widths is presented. The method uses linear chirp generation in supercontinuum pulses in a normal dispersion fiber. This linear chirp is utilized by an anomalous dispersion fiber to shorten the pulse widths down to a few hundreds of femtoseconds. This compression method results in 0.28-ps 10-GHz optical pulses...

Gain-switched laser diodes are widely used to generate short optical pulses, which ®nd several applications in optical ®ber measurements and high-speed optical communication systems. Temporal and spectral properties of the gain-switched pulses can be tailored by ®ltering their optical spectrum. Optical ®ltering leads to suppression of frequency chirp and generation of transform-limited pulses. ...

We report the extension of hollow-core fibre pulse compression to longer wavelengths. High-energy multi-cycle infrared pulses are generated via optical parametric amplification and subsequently broadened in the fibre. 2.5-cycle pulses at the Signal wavelength (1.4 μm) and 1.6-cycle pulses at the Idler wavelength (1.8 μm) in the sub-millijoule regime have been generated. New compression schemes ...

The capability to produce laser pulses of arbitrary temporal shape is important in areas of optical communication,' atomic and molecular spectroscopy~ and laserfu~ion.~ Previous pulse-shaping techniques have achievedmoderate success in these areas.44 The new approach discussed here, using the technique of spectral beam deflection (SBD), offers the potential of higher temporal resolution combine...
