Subclavian vein puncture is a relatively fast and safe technique to access the right heart for placement of pacemaker leads. Hemothorax related to injury of the pulmonary artery (PA) is a rare complication of subclavian vein access but can be life-threatening. We report a case of hemothorax occurring after subclavian vein puncture for pacemaker implantation. No cases of transcatheter arterial e...
BACKGROUND Infection remains a severe complication after pacemaker implantation. The purpose of our prospective study was to evaluate the role of the local bacteriologic flora in its occurrence. METHODS AND RESULTS Specimens were collected at the site of implantation for culture from the skin and the pocket before and after insertion in a consecutive series of patients who underwent elective ...
We reported a case of isolated anomaly of the left brachiocephalic vein which is diagnosed during a permanent pacemaker implantation. It is a very rare anomaly and makes the left sided pacemaker implantation impossible.
Some acute complications are known during permanent pacemaker implantation such as pneumothorax, lead perforation, lead dislodgement, and hemorrhage. ST-segment elevation in electrocardiogram during implantation is rare, but it might indicate critical complication like myocardial ischemia or ventricular perforation. Physicians should pay attention about ST-segment change during pacemaker implan...
INTRODUCTION Transvenous insertion of endocardial leads for permanent pacing is often accompanied by minor myocardial damage, detected thanks to the high sensitivity of cardiac troponins. It is unknown whether higher troponin levels, commensurate with more severe myocardial damage, can be encountered after implantation procedures. METHODS Over a 3-year period, 283 patients underwent an implan...
Permanent pacemaker implantation improves survival but can cause tricuspid valve dysfunction in the form of regurgitation (TR). The dominant mechanism pacemaker-mediated TR is lead impingement. This study evaluated association between location leads crossing and incidence worsening impingement using fluoroscopy. Lead positions were perpendicular right anterior oblique (RAO) parallel left (LAO) ...
The present paper is an interesting and rare complication of implantation of a permanent pacemaker lead. The rarity of the case is based upon that ventricular perforation is usually present during implantation, whereas in our case, it was presented late--1 month after implantation. Furthermore, in our case, the pacemaker lead had migrated through the left hemidiaphragm into the peritoneal cavity.
AIM To audit prospectively the reasons for pacemaker implantation, the duration of the pacemaker use, the cause of death, and pacemaker function after removal from the patient. METHODS Pacemakers were removed at necropsy, or from the bodies of patients awaiting cremation, in three hospitals over a three year period. The cause of death was taken from the results of the necropsy or from the cer...
BACKGROUND Severe postoperative conduction disturbances requiring permanent pacemaker implantation frequently occur following cardiac surgery. Little is known about the long-term pacing requirements and risk factors for pacemaker dependency in this population. METHODS We performed a systematic review of the literature addressing rates and predictors of pacemaker dependency in patients requiri...
Background—A large disparity in medical health care is clearly evident between developed and underserved nations in the field of cardiac electrophysiology, specifically pacemaker implantation. This study aimed to assess the safety of pacemaker reuse. Methods and Results—A computerized search from January 1, 1970, to September 1, 2010, identified 18 studies with outcomes of pacemaker reuse. The ...
