We have analysed data on respiratory syncytial (RS) and parainfluenza type 3 (PF3) viruses reported to the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre, London, over the period 1978-87. These confirm the annual winter epidemic of RS virus and show that, in England and Wales, PF3 is a summer infection with regular yearly epidemics.
A trivalent parainfluenza virus vaccine has been tested in guinea pigs. The parainfluenza 2 virus vaccine component was superior in the magnitude of antibody titers, and in the ability to convert animals serologically after two doses of an undiluted or a 10-fold diluted vaccine. The parainfluenza 1 virus vaccine gave a higher percentage of conversion than parainfluenza 3 virus vaccine after adm...
Parainfluenza virus (PIV) is a leading cause of respiratory infections in humans. A novel virus closely related to human and bovine parainfluenza viruses types 3 (HPIV-3 and BPIV-3), named Tursiops truncatus parainfluenza virus type 1 (TtPIV-1), was isolated from a dolphin with respiratory disease. We developed a dolphin-specific ELISA to measure acute- and convalescent-phase PIV antibodies in ...
The aetiology of Kawasaki disease has not yet been precisely determined. It has been associated with a variety of bacterial and viral agents. Some viruses including human adenovirus, coronavirus, and parainfluenza virus type 3 have been isolated from patients with Kawasaki disease. Clinical presentation of patients with human coronavirus and adenovirus infections mimics Kawasaki disease. In add...
The myxoviruses which infect man can be divided into two major subgroups (Table 1): the influenza subgroup which includes influenza virus types A, B, and C and the noninfluenza subgroup which includes parainfluenza types 1 (HA-2), 2 (CA), 3 (HA-1), and 4, mumps, measles, and respiratory syncytial viruses. Related but distinct antigenic variants or subtypes have been detected among types of both...
Some paramyxoviruses form long filamentous virus particles: however, the determinants of filament formation and the role of such particles in virus transmission and pathogenicity are not clearly defined. By using conventional immunofluorescence microscopy, we found that human parainfluenza virus type 2 (HPIV2) forms filamentous particles ranging from 5 to 15 microm in length in virus-infected, ...
Canine parainfluenza virus (CPiV) is one of the most common organisms isolated from dogs with signs of infectious tracheobronchitis (ITB). Distribution is apparently worldwide. Although CPiV may cause mild clinical infections, clinical diseases is expected to be more severe in dogs co-infected with bordetella bronchiseptica than with any these agents alone. The present study was conducted to d...
In this study an immunofluorescence (IF) method was used to investigate the antigens of viruses and atypical bacteria in respiratory tract infections (RTI) in pediatric and adult age groups. In this prospective study of 2 years (1998-2000), IF was used to investigate the antigens of 7 viral and 3 atypical bacteria to be used for the etiological diagnosis of RTI. Sputum (33.6%) and nasopharyngea...
An association exists between respiratory viruses and bacterial infections. Prevention or treatment of the preceding viral infection is a logical goal for reducing this important cause of morbidity and mortality. The ability of the novel, selective parainfluenza virus hemagglutinin-neuraminidase inhibitor BCX 2798 to prevent the synergism between a paramyxovirus and Streptococcus pneumoniae was...
