Integral linear energy transfer (LET) spectra of cosmic radiation (CR) particles were measured on five Cosmos series spacecraft in low Earth orbit (LEO). Particular emphasis is placed on results of the Cosmos 1887 biosatellite which carried a set of joint U.S.S.R.-U.S.A. radiation experiments involving passive detectors that included thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs), plastic nuclear track de...

This project aims to demonstrate how the detection process of broadband clicks can be modeled for different marine mammal species and detectors and assess the magnitude of error on the estimated density due to various commonly used simplifying assumptions in the modeling process. Our main purposes are to quantify potential biases in the population density estimate for selected species and detec...

In this work, we present the results of integrated Ge detectors grown on a Si photonic platform for sensing applications. The detectors are fabricated on a passive photonic circuit for maximum coupling efficiency. Measurement results at 1300 nm wavelength show a responsivity of 0.2 A/W and very low dark current levels. For a voltage range between 0 and −10 V, the dark current is better than 0.1...

This study examined correlations between radon, thoron and thoron progeny concentrations based on surveys conducted in several different countries. For this purpose, passive detectors developed or modified by the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) were used. Radon and thoron concentrations were measured using passive discriminative radon-thoron detectors. Thoron progeny measurem...

Challenges in signal detection in the presence of noise arise in many underwater acoustic applications such as active and passive sonar, geophysical surveying, and marine life monitoring. The detection problem is generally formulated within the framework of binary hypothesis testing. An important class of detectors, known as the locally optimum detectors, are designed based on the expectation t...

Infrared detection in military applications and pyrometry has a long history. Although some more recent IR applications like fiber optics communication or focal plane arrays for imaging have rapidly evolved in the last decades, PIR motion detection technology went its own way, and has not much in common with other infrared applications at 10 microns wavelength, due to the requirements for low c...
