background:   valproic acid (vpa) is used to be an effective anti-epileptic drug and mood stabilizer. it has recently been demonstrated that vpa could promote neurite outgrowth, activate the extracellular signal regulated kinase pathway, and increases bcl-2 and growth cone-associated protein 43 levels in spinal cord. in the present research we demonstrate the effect of vpa on peripheral nerve r...

We present a case of a solitary neurofibroma involving the right posterior shoulder of a 69-year-old man with degeneration into a massive, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor measuring more than 3 times the average reported size. The radiographic, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomographic features are compared with the gross appearance and pathology.

A 38-year-old man was diagnosed with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour of the maxilla. He was treated with total maxillectomy. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen revealed a close resection margin. The tumour was of high grade with an MIB-1 labelling index of almost 60%. At six weeks following the surgery, he developed local tumour relapse. The patient succumbed to the...

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours are uncommon aggressive soft tissue sarcomas that originate from peripheral nerves or cells associated with the nerve sheath. Scalp malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours are extremely rare and the role of multimodality management is unclear. We report a 43-year-old female with scalp swelling and rapid growth. Imaging demonstrated an ...

INTRODUCTION Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are rare soft tissue sarcomas. They are considered to carry a poor prognosis with current therapeutic approaches. Successful treatment depends on a multimodal approach. CASE PRESENTATION The authors report two cases with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors arising from pre-existing neurofibromas in the grounds of neurofibromatis-type ...

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is defined as any malignant tumor arising from or differentiating toward the cells of the peripheral nerve sheath. MPNST accounts for about 5-10% of all soft tissue tumors and is often associated with neurofibromatosis type I (NF-1, von Recklinghausen's disease). It is one of the malignant tumors associated with von Recklinghausen's disease. Its c...

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses are extremely uncommon. We report the case of a 65-year-old woman who presented with a rapid emergence of "nasal polyps" that completely obstructed her nasal passages. Six years earlier she had been assessed elsewhere for nasal polyps. At presentation, the patient exhibited gross polyposis, with lesions protruding from b...

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors arise from Schwann cells or within existing neurofibromas and have a strong association with type 1 neurofibromatosis. These tumors are histologically diverse and may contain malignant areas of divergent mesenchymal differentiation, the most common of which is skeletal muscle (rhabdomyosarcoma). Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor with rhabdomyosarco...
