The fact that the nerve m e m b r a n e shows permselectivity for cations (1) suggests the presence of fixed negative charges in its matrix. Ionic exchange membranes show some other characteristic propeties besides permselectivity. Among them are the electrical p h e n o m e n a produced by water flow across the m e m b r a n e as well as the movemen t of water caused by the passage of current ...

Nanofiltration with inorganic meso-porous membranes is being considered more and more for water purification applications. For specific applications inorganic membranes may have advantages over organic polymer-based membranes due to their rigid pore structure, and thermochemical stability. However, the permeability and, partly through that, the permselectivity of inorganic membranes need to be ...

The physiology of glomerular permselectivity remains mechanistically obscure, despite its importance in human disease. Although electrical contributions to glomerular permselectivity have long been considered important, two recent reports demonstrated enhanced glomerular permeability to anionic versus neutral polysaccharides. The interpretation of these observations is complicated by confoundin...

In ion-exchange membranes (IEMs), the concentration-induced tradeoff between conductivity and permselectivity constrains process performance. This study investigates impacts of different electrolytes on conductivity-permselectivity commercial cation anion exchange membranes. Nine electrolyte solutions containing mono-, di-, trivalent ions, spanning 1.5 orders magnitude in concentration were exa...

The near-field of surface plasmons is locally confined to nanometer dimensions. Here, we use surface plasmons to initiate polymer-functionalization of mesoporous silica films allowing subsequent ionic permselectivity gating based on polymer charge. We expect this functionalization approach to open a new dimension of functional miniaturization e.g. in nanofluidics.

Despite the central role of tubular plasma proteins that characterize progressive kidney diseases, protein concentrations along the nephron in pathological conditions have not been quantified so far. We combined experimental techniques and theoretical analysis to estimate glomerular and tubular levels of albumin in the experimental model of 5/6 nephrectomy (Nx) in the rat, with or without angio...

Dissolution and precipitation reactions that occur in biological systems and in non-stirred in vitro systems generally are diffusion-controlled. Subsurface demineralization of tooth enamel in dental caries, which has been the subject of considerable interest, is an example of such processes. In the caries process ions from solubilized tooth mineral, i. e., Ca, P04, and OH, need to be transporte...
