The repertory grid test, based on personal construct psychology, was used to evaluate the effectiveness of Project P.A.T.H.S. (Positive Adolescent Training through Holistic Social Programmes) in Hong Kong. One hundred and four program participants (n = 104) were randomly invited to complete a repertory grid based on personal construct theory in order to provide both quantitative and qualitative...

Personal computers-valuable tools or expensive luxuries? Over the past few years a considerable number of companies have developed instruments, both sophisticated and simple, which incorporate microprocessors in their design. Evidence from various conferences and exhibitions seems to suggest that .after a number of initial problems several instrument companies are getting the design concepts ri...

A Personal Distributed Environment (PDE) embraces a user-centric view of communications that take place against a backdrop of multiple user devices, each with its distinct capabilities, in physically separate locations. This paper provides an overview of a Personal Distributed Environment and some of the research issues related to the implementation of the PDE concept that are being considered ...

INTRODUCTION Historical biographies facilitate teaching the 'nature of science'. This case study focuses on how Nikolai Vavilov's unrelenting sense of purpose, courage, and charismatic personality was maintained during violent revolutionary change in Russia. CASE DESCRIPTION The rediscovery of Gregor Mendel's laws of inheritance provided Vavilov with a scientific foundation for crop improveme...

Ubiquitous environments may become a reality in a foreseeable future and research is aimed on making them more and more adapted and comfortable for users. Our work consists on applying reinforcement learning techniques in order to adapt services provided by a ubiquitous assistant to the user. The learning produces a context model, associating actions to perceived situations of the user. Associa...

Today, many countries are launching E-Government projects to effectively enhance the provision of governmental services. E-Government encompasses the usage of all information and communications technologies (so far mainly by using the Internet) to deliver governmental services to citizens and improve the quality of governmental activities. However, various EGovernment ranking surveys show that ...

Modern Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) architectures often use a wholesale data transfer protocol known as “slow sync” for synchronizing PDAs with Personal Computers (PCs). This approach is markedly inefficient, in terms of bandwidth usage and latency, since the PDA and PC typically share many common records. We propose, analyze, and implement a novel PDA synchronization scheme (CPIsync) based...

The bottleneck in the process of building exnert svstems is retrieving the appropriate problemsolving knowledge from tKe hum-in expert. -Methods of knowledge elicitation and analysis from psychotherapy based on enhancements to George Kelly’s Personal Construct Theory are applied to this process. The Expertise Transfer System is described which interviews a human expert and then constructs and a...

This paper presents an analytical performance prediction model and methodology that can be used to predict the execution time, speedup and similar performance metrics of a string matching algorithm running on a cluster of personal computers. The developed performance model has been checked on a 6-cluster of computers and it has been shown that this model is able to predict the parallel run-time...

In this paper we present a parallel implementation for solving the string matching problem. Experiments are realized using the Message Passing Interface (MPI) library on a cluster of personal computers, interconnected by a high-performance Fast Ethernet network. Significant speedup was achieved using different text sizes and number of processors.
