Pile driveability analyses for offshore platforms require a unique set of criteria, which may not normally be associated with other pile foundation installations. The selected hammers, pile makeup details and soil profile must be carefully reviewed, as these factors will determine if pile installations will be successful. The most important of the variables to establish is the expected Soil Res...

The temporal fluctuation of the average slope of a ricepile model is investigated. It is found that the power spectrum S(f) scales as 1/f with α ≈ 1.3 when grains of rice are added only to one end of the pile. If grains are randomly added to the pile, the power spectrum exhibits 1/f behavior. The profile fluctuations of the pile under different driving mechanisms are also discussed. PACS number...

This paper describes the development of an accurate long-distance position measurement system for construction pile using Laser Range Finders (LRF). The pile positioning and driving is the first work that is one of the important works to request the attentions in the building construction. In general, though the position of piling is measured by the total station that is high accurate survey ma...

Juvenile Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, were exposed to simulated high intensity pile driving signals to evaluate their ability to recover from barotrauma injuries. Fish were exposed to one of two cumulative sound exposure levels for 960 pile strikes (217 or 210 dB re 1 µPa(2)·s SEL(cum); single strike sound exposure levels of 187 or 180 dB re 1 µPa(2)⋅s SEL(ss) respectively). This w...

This paper presents 53 well-documented cases of the short-term set-up of open-ended steel pipe piles driven at two fields in the North Sea. Increases in soil resistance during driving (set-up) were observed when pile driving was re-started after delays typically ranging between 24 h and 100 h. The soil encountered at the sites consisted of overconsolidated sands and clays, where the clays varie...

Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) sponsored research performed at the University of Florida resulted in developing a wireless monitoring and real time static capacity estimate technology for driven piles. This new technology, Embedded Data Collector (EDC), uses two levels of instrumentation, embedded in the body of precast prestressed concrete piles near the head and tip. Strain and a...

In view of the rapid extension of offshore wind farms, there is an urgent need to improve our knowledge on possible adverse effects of underwater sound generated by pile-driving. Mortality and injuries have been observed in fish exposed to loud impulse sounds, but knowledge on the sound levels at which (sub-)lethal effects occur is limited for juvenile and adult fish, and virtually non-existent...
