Toward the end of the 1770s, a poet writing at the request of a powerful Buddhist monk on the island we now know as Sri Lanka juxtaposed four images of Lankan Buddhist life. The first, with which he described the time before his patron’s monastic order came into being, was an image of darkness, hypocrisy, and delusion. It described a time in which, according to the poet, Buddhist monks betrayed...

We present POET, a scripting language designed for applying advanced program transformations to code in arbitrary programming languages as well as building adhoc translators between these languages. We have used POET to support a large number of compiler optimizations, including loop interchange, parallelization, blocking, fusion/fission, strength reduction, scalar replacement, SSE vectorizatio...

We have developed a pooled ORF expression technology, POET, that uses recombinational cloning and proteomic methods (two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry) to identify ORFs that when expressed are likely to yield high levels of soluble, purified protein. Because the method works on pools of ORFs, the procedures needed to subclone, express, purify, and assay protein expressio...

The Symposium of Plato presents the demythologizing of the god Eros, that is, the rational clarification of his nature. At a dinner to celebrate the victory of the tragic poet Agathon in the Theatre, the guests all give speeches in honour of the god. Of the initial speakers, neither the comic poet Aristophanes nor the tragic poet Agathon can give more than a partial account of his nature, and i...

We evaluate the security of the recently proposed authenticated encryption scheme POET with regard to weak keys when its universal hash functions are instantiated with finite field multiplications. We give explicit constructions for weak key classes not covered by POET’s weak key testing strategy, and demonstrate how to leverage them to obtain universal forgeries.

The Solitary Reaper is one of William Wordsworth’s representatives which portrays an Irish girl working and singing solitarily in a field. This poem fully reflects the loneliness of the poet. He uses varying wording and phrasing, the lonely image of the reaper, the expanding of the lonely music, and the way of expressing his loneliness to set the lonely atmosphere. Therefore, it is necessary to...

We present a general-purpose code transformation system, the POET system, for the purpose of automatic code generation from high-level behavior specifications of object-oriented abstractions to low-level efficient implementations in C++ and Java. In particular, we have developed an extended finite-state-machine-based language, iFSM, which models the behavior logic together with implementation d...

Because of the complexity of distributed applications, understanding their behaviour is a challenging task. Frequently, tools that provide graphical visualizations based on process-time diagrams are provided to facilitate this understanding task. While a wide variety of such tools exist, few address the complexity problem directly. In contrast, our research has focused on the problem of visuali...

that she gave to him would never wither, '' sheltered and shut in a nook of rhyme from the reaper man and his reaper Time." Keats also, despite his humility, had this prescience of immortality: "I think," he said, "I shall be among the English poets after my death." He knew that Time's fell hand would touch him only lightly. He is, above others, the Poet of Beauty?of Beauty in Nature, in the he...
