A new preparation method of polymer dyes was developed to improve both the grafting degree of the azo dyes onto O-carboxymethyl chitosan (OMCS) and the water solubility of prepared polymer dyes. Firstly, the coupling compound of two azo edible colorants, sunset yellow (SY) and allura red (AR), was grafted onto OMCS, and then coupled with their diazonium salt. The chemical structure of prepared ...

A critical review on the synthesis, characterization, and modeling of polymer grafting is presented. Although motivation stemmed from synthetic polymers onto lignocellulosic biopolymers, a comprehensive overview also provided chemical grafting, processing grafted materials different types, including backbones. has been studied for many decades—and so branching crosslinking that matter, thereby ...

Three-dimensional Monte Carlo simulations of flexible and semiflexible polymer brushes at various grafting densities are carried out to study their equilibrium structure and attendant properties by using the bond fluctuation model. Our simulation results of long flexible polymer brushes are, in general, consistent with predictions of the self-consistent field theory. However, a depletion layer ...

Conformations of a bottle-brush polymer with two types (A,B) of grafted side chains are studied bymolecular dynamics simulations, using a coarse-grained bead-springmodel with side chains of up to N = 50 effective monomers. Varying the solvent quality and the grafting density, the crossover from the “pearl-necklace” structure to dense cylinders is studied. Whereas for small grafting density, Aan...

Control and tuning of surface properties is indispensable for the programmed and rational design of materials. Particularly, polymeric brush-modified colloids can be used as carrier materials for enzyme immobilization. Although it is of prime importance to control the brush architecture, there is still a lack of systematic investigations concerning the impact of grafting density on the properti...

The development of proton-exchange membranes for fuel cells has generated global interest in order to have a potential source of power for stationary and portable applications. The membrane is the heart of a fuel cell and the performance of a fuel cell depends largely on the physico-chemical nature of the membrane and its stability in the hostile environment of hydrogen and oxygen at elevated t...

Polymer-coated surfaces are routinely used in industrially important applications including prevention of biofouling (in fabrication of protein-resistant surfaces), improving stability of colloidal dispersions, surface lubrication, or enhancing wettability and adhesion. Polymer chains chemically bound to the surface represent a special class of polymer coatings that has gained considerable atte...

Polymer cages prepared by etching of gold nanoparticles from polymer templates by the "grafting around" method are designed for selective separation of metal nanoparticles. The separation process is demonstrated as a fast biphasic ligand exchange reaction. The high separation efficiency and size selectivity of the polymer cage is verified by comparison with the linear block copolymer.

We discuss methods leading to the fabrication of orthogonal substrates comprising surfaceanchored polymer brushes, in which the polymer brush grafting density and molecular weight vary independently in two mutually perpendicular directions. We demonstrate that these orthogonal polymer substrates can be used as intelligent combinatorial platforms that facilitate the spatial distribution of nanop...

In this article, we consolidate several literature reports in an attempt to provide a structural definition of a polymer brush as a tethered polymer layer with a high grafting density of polymer chains. We will try to distinguish a brush from grafted polymer layers and coated layers and provide a reasonable approach to the description of the brush regime with a single parameter S—reduced grafti...
