The Schelling model is one of a small number of “agent based” population models, where individual members of the population (agents) interact directly with other agents and move in space and time. In this note we study one-dimensional Schelling population models as dynamical systems and find formulas and precise asymptotics for the number of limit states.
Computational simulations are currently used to identify epidemic dynamics, to test potential prevention and intervention strategies, and to study the effects of social behaviors on HIV transmission. The author describes an agent-based epidemic simulation model of a network of individuals who participate in high-risk sexual practices, using number of partners, condom usage, and relationship len...
Human is a crucial factor responsible for local and large scale environmental change and is a key factor in rural management. Accurate simulating and predicting population change and its spatial distribution is of great interests to environmental scientists as well as social scientists. In this paper, we introduced the development of a spatial-explicit agent-based population model for China bas...
Importance: Providing high-quality care while containing cost is essential for the economic stability of our health care system. The United States is experiencing a rapidly growing elderly population. The Acute Care for Elders (ACE) unit interdisciplinary team model of care has been shown to improve outcomes in hospitalized older adults. The University of Alabama at Birmingham ACE unit incorpor...
We consider an interaction between a donor and a recipient where the actions of a donor produce multiple results to the recipient. There are Optimists and Pessimists who focus on the best and worst outcomes among them as a recipient of the interaction, respectively, and they try to reflect on their experience in their next action as a donor. What is the effect on the emergence of cooperation? T...
Over the past couple of decades, virtual humans have been attracting more and more attention. Many applications including, video games, movies, and various training and tutoring systems have benefited from work in this area. While the visual quality of virtual agents has improved dramatically, their intelligence and socialization still needs improvement. In this paper, we present work towards e...
How does the use of a secret vote affect the likelihood that legislators will punish their peers? Two contending arguments exist in the literature: some argue that secret voting may be prejudicial, while others argue that it may help accountability. We address this controversy by analyzing the case of the Brazilian Congress, which uses a sequential combination of open and secret voting procedur...
Electronic institutions (EIs) have been proposed as a means of regulating open agent societies. EIs define the rules of the game in agent societies by fixing what agents are permitted and forbidden to do and under what circumstances. And yet, there is the need for EIs to adapt their regulations to comply with their goals despite coping with varying populations of self-interested agents. In this...
Simulating the transmission of HIV requires a model framework that can account for the complex nature of HIV transmission. In this paper the authors present the current state of the art for simulating HIV with agent-based models and highlight some of the significant contributions of current research. The authors then propose opportunities for future work including their plan that involves ident...
Population-based Incremental Learning is shown require very sensitive scaling of its learning rate. The learning rate must scale with the system size in a problem-dependent way. This is shown in two problems: the needle-in-a haystack, in which the learning rate must vanish exponentially in the system size, and in a smooth function in which the learning rate must vanish like the square root of t...
