We compared wedged hepatic venous pressure (WHVP), splenic pulp pressure (SPP) and trans-splenic portal vein pressure (TSPVP) in healthy dogs. We found that portal blood pressure could be measured in dogs using any of these techniques. The WHVP, SPP and TSPVP were 7.8 ± 1.0, 6.2 ± 0.8 and 6.8 ± 1.2 mmHg, respectively. Measuring SPP using ultrasound is most simple and minimally invasive, and it ...
We studied arterial pressure, portal pressure, inferior vena caval pressure, hepatic interstitial pressure (implanted capsule technique), prenodal lymph flow, and the protein concentration in plasma and lymph in the anesthetized dog under normal conditions and during graded venous hypertension resulting from inferior vena caval occlusion. Under control conditions, portal, interstitial, and infe...
Nitrates have been shown to decrease portal pressure in cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension and this has been attributed to decreased portal venous resistance. We studied the effect and mechanism of action of oral administration of isosorbide-5-mononitrate (Is-5-Mn) (20 mg), which, unlike the dinitrate, does not require hepatic biotransformation to a vasoactive metabolite on portal and ...
BACKGROUND Height of portal pressure correlates with severity of alcoholic cirrhosis. Portal pressure indices are not however used routinely as predictors of survival. AIMS To examine the clinical value of a single portal pressure measurement in predicting outcome in cirrhotic patients who have bled. METHODS A series of 105 cirrhotic patients who consecutively underwent hepatic venous press...
Portal hypertension is a clinical syndrome defined by a pathological increase in portal pressure. The development of cirrhosis of the liver is characterized by clinical manifestations related to portal hypertension like esophageal varices, ascites, bleeding, and encephalopathy. Direct measurement of portal pressure is invasive, inconvenient, and clinically impractical. Currently, the most commo...
OBJECTIVE We wanted to evaluate the mid-term therapeutic results of percutaneous transhepatic balloon angioplasty for portal vein stenosis after liver transplantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS From May 1996 to Feb 2005, 420 patients underwent liver transplantation. Percutaneous transhepatic angioplasty of the portal vein was attempted in six patients. The patients presented with the clinical sig...
Intestinal transcapillary water and total protein flux were determined in dogs with chronic extrahepatic portal hypertension after construction of an aortic-portal shunt combined with hilar portal vein constriction and compared to acute portal vein constriction. Measurements were made of thoracic duct lymph flow, portal venous pressure, and total protein concentration in plasma, thoracic duct l...
BACKGROUND Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feeding is widely used as a route for enteral feeding for patients with impaired swallowing ability, particularly in older patients. Hepatic portal venous gas is a condition that may arise from several causes. Hepatic portal venous gas that develops after an endoscopic procedure is generally reported to be nonfatal, yet there is little information ...
