This paper considers a discrete-time queue with gated priority. Low priority customers arrive at the first queue at the gate in batches according to a batch Bernoulli process (BBP). When the gate opens, all low priority customers at the first queue move to the second queue at a single server. On the other hand, high priority customers directly join the second queue upon arrival. The arrival pro...
A priority queue transforms an input permutation p1 of a totally ordered set of size n into an output permutation p2. Atkinson and Thiyagarajah showed that the number of such pairs (p1; p2) is (n+1)n 1, which is well known to be the number of labeled trees on n + 1 vertices. We give a new proof of this result by finding a bijection from such pairs of permutations to labeled trees.

A very fast mesh simplification algorithm based on halfedge collapse is proposed in this work with a focus on progressive graphic transmission applications. We generalize the Quadric Error Metric (QEM) method to accommodate new topological operations. A flatness criterion is combined with the defined metric to preserve the visual quality of simplified meshes. We further adopt the vertex-based p...
This paper applies a matrix-analytic approach to analyze both the long-term and the short-term loss behaviors of a queue with space priority scheme. Five related performance measures are derived from conditional statistics, including the long-term highpriority and low-priority packet loss probabilities, and the three short-term measures — the average length of a critical period, the average len...
When a set of permutations comprising a pattern class C is submitted as input to a priority queue the resulting output is again a pattern class C′. The basis of C′ is determined for pattern classes C whose basis elements have length 3, and is finite in these cases. An example is given of a class C with basis {2431} for which C′ is not finitely based. Mathematics Subject Classification: 05A05, 6...
A priority queue transforms an input sequence ~r into an output sequence r which is a re-ordering of the sequence ~r. The set R of all such related pairs is studied in the case that tr is a binary sequence. It is proved that R is a partial order and that IRI = c,~+1, the (n + 1)th Catalan number, An efficient (O(n2)) algorithm is given for computing the number of outputs achievable from a given...
We examine an M/G/1 queue with several queueing disciplines. After reviewing some background material in probability theory, we consider a first-come first-served queue. Next, we examine an absolute priority queue, where high priority customers are always selected for service over lower priority customers, regardless of how long the latter have been waiting. We also review a method for calculat...
Shanthikumar [10] studied the priority M/G/1 queue with server vacations and found that the difference between the waiting time distribution under the non-preemptive priority and that under the preemptive-resume priority is independent of the vacation policy. We extend this interesting property i) to the generalized vacations which includes the two vacation policies considered by Shanthikumar, ...
