PURPOSE To compare the MR imaging and MR angiographic changes with in vivo proton MR spectroscopic findings and to determine the spectral differences between edema and ischemia in patients with eclampsia. METHODS Spin-echo MR imaging, MR angiography, and single-voxel proton MR spectroscopy were performed in 10 patients with eclampsia. MR studies were obtained within 3 to 5 days of diagnosis a...

SUMMARY Proton MR spectroscopy is a powerful noninvasive method that enables measurement of certain brain metabolites in healthy subjects and patients with diseases. A major difficulty with clinical and research applications of in vivo proton MR spectroscopy is the variability of metabolite concentrations, especially in regions with substantial physiologic motion. In our preliminary evaluation,...

We show a detailed magnetic resonance (MR) examination of two rare pericallosa lipomas with a fat suppression imaging sequence and proton MR spectroscopy. For comparison, subcutaneous fat and lipids in glioblastomas were examined with H MR spectroscopy in vivo and ex vivo. Fat suppression makes the identification of lipomas simple. It is suggested that H MR spectroscopy shows no differences in ...

MR imaging of the brain in a 38-year-old woman with maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) showed extensive subcortical and basal ganglia high signal intensity on T2-weighted studies though she was neurologically asymptomatic. High-signal-intensity changes were also seen in the basal ganglia on T1-weighted studies. Proton MR spectroscopy showed increased lactate, an increased choline...

PURPOSE To investigate the feasibility of performing multisection proton MR spectroscopy in patients with acute stroke, and to determine whether this imaging technique can depict ischemic or infarcted brain regions. METHODS Multisection proton MR spectroscopy, MR imaging, and MR angiography were performed within 24 hours of stroke onset (mean, 12 hours) in 12 patients who had had a stroke of ...

This study reports the MR spectroscopic patterns of two patients with bithalamic glioma. In one patient, phosphorus (31P) MR spectroscopy was performed. In both patients, the proton MR spectroscopic scans showed an increased creatine-phosphocreatine peak in the tumor. In the patient who underwent 31P-MR spectroscopy, an increased phosphocreatine peak was also observed. This group of thalamic tu...

Anlar BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Myelin instability and citrullinated myelin basic protein have been demonstrated in the brains of patients with chronic and fulminating forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Our aim was to trace citrulline in the brains of patients with early-onset MS by using proton MR s...

PURPOSE To determine the ability of in vitro one-dimensional and two-dimensional proton MR spectroscopy to help differentiate squamous cell carcinoma of the extracranial head and neck from normal tissues and to correlate the in vitro observations with clinical studies. METHODS In vitro 1-D and 2-D correlated proton MR spectroscopy (11 T) was performed in tissue specimens of squamous cell carc...

Proton MR spectroscopic findings in two patients with genetically defined Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease revealed ratios of N-acetylaspartate/creatine and choline-containing compounds/creatine that were not significantly different from those found in a population of healthy subjects. These findings suggest that proton MR spectroscopy can aid in the diagnosis of Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease.

PURPOSE To delineate the changes in proton MR spectroscopy and imaging that occur with acute, irreversible ischemia of the basal ganglia of a baboon. MATERIALS AND METHODS The M1 segments of the middle cerebral arteries of six adult male baboons were occluded by endovascular means with microcatheters and N-butyl cyanoacrylate adhesive. Cerebral blood flow measurements were taken with positron...
