The polymerization of hydrophilic monomers is reported utilizing Cu(0)-mediated living radical polymerization, SET-LRP. Highly active Cu(0) is formed in situ as a result of rapid disproportionation of [Cu(I)(Me6-Tren)Br] in serum. Disproportionation and homogenous controlled radical polymerization (PDI 1.09-1.25) are performed for the first time in blood (sheep) serum.
We developed dinuclear molybdenum cluster-catalyzed radical addition and polymerization reactions by tuning the redox potential of the Mo(2) core. A 2,4,6-triisopropylbenzoate-supported Mo(2) complex acts as a catalyst for radical addition reactions of polyhaloalkanes to 1-alkenes and cyclopentene, while amidinate- and guanidinate-supported Mo(2) clusters are effective catalysts for the radical...
New copolymers from hindered amines and vinyl monomers were synthesized by radical chain polymerization. To obtain polymeric HALS, acrylamide-(1ATP) and acrylate-(4ATP) monomers, derivatives from 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinol were synthesized. The radical chain polymerization of 1ATP with styrene (Sty) using 1-butanethiol (BTN) resulted in a copolymer with ...
Although most monomers can polymerize through different propagation pathways, polymerization-initiating systems that switch from one mode to another are rare. In this study, we demonstrate enamine-based organic electron donors (OEDs) constitute the first able initiate either free-radical or anionic polymerization under simple, mild, and safe conditions. While direct electron-transfer reduction ...
Free radical polymerization is one of the most widely employed polymerization techniques. This technique is applied to prepare latexes to be used in paints, high molecular weight poly (methyl methacrylate) for safety glass (Plexiglas), or foamed poly (styrene) to be applied in coffee cups. Some advantages of radical polymerizations, with respect to other techniques, are the relative insensitivi...
In free-radical polymerization, a monomer-initiator mixture is converted into a polymer. Depending on initial and boundary conditions, free-radical polymerization can occur either in a bulk mode (BP) or in a frontal mode (FP) via a propagating selfsustaining reaction front. The main goal of this paper is to study the role that bulk polymerization plays in frontal polymerization processes for va...
The objective of this paper is to present a dynamic Monte Carlo model that is able to simulate the polymerization of styrene with bifunctional free-radical initiators in a batch reactor. The model can predict the dynamic evolution of the chain length distribution of polystyrene in the reactor. The model includes all relevant polymerization mechanistic steps, including chemical and thermal radic...
