This paper describes the online demo of the QuALiM Question Answering system. While the system actually gets answers from the web by querying major search engines, during presentation answers are supplemented with relevant passages from Wikipedia. We believe that this additional information improves a user’s search experience.

Resolution theorem proving provides a useful paradigm for the exploration of question answering. A partition of the clauses generated during resolution refutation based on their syntactic structure is presented. The three classes comprising this partition correspond to semantically intuitive types of answers. This work encompasses and expands upon previous work on question answering in a theore...

We aim to provide table answers to keyword queries using a knowledge base. For queries referring to multiple entities, like “Washington cities population” and “Mel Gibson movies”, it is better to represent each relevant answer as a table which aggregates a set of entities or joins of entities within the same table scheme or pattern. In this paper, we study how to find highly relevant patterns i...

Question Answering (QA) research for factoid questions has recently achieved great success. Presently, QA systems developed for European, Middle Eastern and Asian languages are capable of providing answers with reasonable accuracy. However, Bengali being among themost spoken languages in theworld, no factoid question answering system is available for Bengali till date. This paper describes the ...

This paper describes details of our participation in the NTCIR-6 Chinese-to-Chinese Question Answering task. We use the “retrieval plus extraction approach” to get answers for questions. We first split the documents into short passages, and then retrieve potentially relevant passages for a question, and finally extract named entity answers from the most relevant passages. For question type iden...

Community Question Answering forums, such as Quora and Stackoverflow contain millions of questions and answers. Automatically finding the relevant questions from the existing questions and finding the relevant answers to a new question are Natural Language Processing tasks. In this paper, we aim to address these tasks, which we refer to as similar-Question Retrieval and Answer Selection. We pre...

The question answering systems are considered the next generation of search engines. This paper focuses on the first step of this process, which is to search for relevant passages containing answers. Passage Retrieval, can be difficult because of the complexity of data, log files in our case. Our contribution is based on the enrichment of queries by using a learning method and a novel term weig...

We present OASSIS (for Ontology ASSISted crowd mining), a prototype system which allows users to declaratively specify their information needs, and mines the crowd for answers. The answers that the system computes are concise and relevant, and represent frequent, significant data patterns. The system is based on (1) a generic model that captures both ontological knowledge, as well as the indivi...

Database systems are increasingly used for interactive and exploratory data retrieval. In such retrievals, users’ queries often result in too many answers, so users waste significant time and efforts sifting and sorting through these answers to find the relevant ones. This chapter first reviews and discusses several research efforts that have attempted to provide users with effective and effici...

Surprisingly, people incorporate errors into their knowledge bases even when they have the correct knowledge stored in memory (e.g., Fazio, Barber, Rajaram, Ornstein, & Marsh, 2013). We examined whether heightening the accessibility of correct knowledge would protect people from later reproducing misleading information that they encountered in fictional stories. In Experiment 1, participants st...
