Memory of 3 capuchin monkeys, Cebus apella, was tested with lists of 4 travel-slide pictures and different retention intervals. They touched different areas of a video monitor to indicate whether a test picture was in a list. At short retention intervals (0 s, 1 s, 2 s), memory was good for the last list items (recency effect). At a 10-s retention interval, memory improved for 1st list items (p...

PURPOSE The effect of total volume perfused on outflow resistance (the reciprocal of outflow facility) and the effect of age on the rate of change in resistance as a function of total volume were determined in rhesus and cynomolgus monkeys. METHODS Outflow facility was measured under general anesthesia by two-level constant pressure perfusion in one eye of 22 rhesus and 17 cynomolgus monkeys ...

The results of an international comparative study of the neurovirulence of oral poliomyelitis vaccines in three species of Old World Monkeys, viz. Macacus irus (cynomolgus), M. mulalla (rhesus) and Cercopithecus aelhiops (vervet) are pre3ented. The greate~t sensitivity to Sabin poliovaccine types 1 and IIr was shown by cynomolgus monkeys, followed by rhesus and vervet monkeys, whilst vervet mon...

PURPOSE Different subspecies of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) that are derived from different geographical locations, primarily Indian and China, are commonly employed in vision research. Substantial morphological and behavioral differences have been reported between Chinese- and Indian-derived subspecies. The purpose of this study was to compare refractive development in Chinese- and Indian-...

1. Rhesus monkeys inoculated with canine distemper are relatively or completely immune to experimental poliomyelitis during the first 2 weeks of the distemper. 2. Monkeys convalescent from distemper are not resistant to experimental poliomyelitis. 3. Two monkeys vaccinated with distemper virus responded to poliomyelitis in a modified manner. 4. Distemper antiserum did not influence the course o...

We showed that rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) can develop a morphine dependence. Rhesus monkeys successfully established a conditioned place preference (CPP) induced by morphine treatment and this preference lasted for at least (36.3 ± 1.3) months. This animal model may be useful for research into addiction in humans.

BACKGROUND Balantidium coli infects humans, primates and pigs, causing serious diarrhea and dysentery. Little information on the prevalence of B. coli in primates is available in China. This investigation was conducted to determine the prevalence of B. coli infection in bred rhesus monkeys in Guangxi Zhuang Nationality Autonomous Region (GZNAR), southern China. METHODS A total of 120 fecal sa...
