Podocarps are often found on lownutrient soils and further exacerbate nutrient limitation through the production of recalcitrant litter. Understanding podocarp ecology therefore depends on understanding the root adaptations of podocarps to obtain nutrients. The roots of podocarps are heterorhizic (having two root forms) with abundant spherical determinate short roots, a unique form of largely u...
Nodule extracts prepared from Glycine max var Woodworth possessed endopeptidase, aminoptidase, and carboxypeptidase actiities. Three distinct endopeptidase activities could be resolved by disc-gel electrophoresis at pH 8.8. According to their order of increasing electrophoretic mobility, the first of these enzymes hydrolyzed azocasein and n-benzoyl-LLeu-p8-naphthylamide, while the second hydrol...
The effect of potassium supply of Vicia faba on the fixation of molecular nitrogen by root nodules was studied by using (15)N-labeled molecular nitrogen. Plants well supplied with potassium showed higher contents of (15)N in the soluble amino fraction and in the protein fraction of various plant organs as compared with plants of a lower potassium status. This effect was evident particularly in ...
A simple procedure, based on the rapid filtration and washing of Frankia vesicle clusters, was devised for the isolation of Frankia strains from alder actinorhizal root nodules. Of 46 Alnus incana subsp. rugosa nodules prepared, 42 yielded isolates. A simple medium containing mineral salts, Casamino Acids, and sodium pyruvate proved to be the most effective for isolation. In general, colonies a...
A large amount of energy is utilized by legume nodules for the fixation of nitrogen and assimilation of fixed nitrogen (ammonia) into organic compounds. The source of energy is provided in the form of photosynthates by the host plant. Phosphoenol pyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) enzyme, which is responsible for carbon dioxide fixation in C4 and crassulacean acid metabolism plants, has also been foun...
The activities and localizations of superoxide dismutases (SODs) were compared in root and stem nodules of the semi-aquatic legume Sesbania rostrata using gel-activity assays and immunogold labelling, respectively. Nodules were fixed by high-pressure freezing and dehydrated by freeze substitution. Stem nodules showed more total and specific SOD activities than root nodules because of the presen...
We report here the whole-genome sequences of 14 strains of Bradyrhizobium canariense, isolated from root nodules of Lupinus microanthus and Lupinus angustifolius, and 1 strain of Bradyrhizobium japonicum isolated from root nodules from Lupinus angustifolius in Algeria. These sequences add to the known diversity of this agronomically important genus.
Root nodulation in actinorhizal plants, like Discaria trinervis and Alnus incana, is subject to feedback regulatory mechanisms that control infection by Frankia and nodule development. Nodule pattern in the root system is controlled by an autoregulatory process that is induced soon after inoculation with Frankia. The final number of nodules, as well as nodule biomass in relation to plant biomas...
The infectible cells of soybean roots appear to be located at any given time just above the zone of root elongation and just below the position of the smallest emergent root hairs. The location of infectible cells on the primary root at the time of inoculation was inferred from the position of subsequent nodule development, correcting for displacement of epidermal cells due to root elongation. ...
