BACKGROUND After 2 decades of focused efforts to eradicate polio, the impact of eradication activities on health systems continues to be controversial. This study evaluated the impact of polio eradication activities on routine immunization (RI) and primary healthcare (PHC). METHODS Quantitative analysis assessed the effects of polio eradication campaigns on RI and maternal healthcare coverage...
Organizational routines have been investigated by scholars from two opposite perspectives: the first is rooted in evolutionary economics of Nelson and Winter; second relies on reconceptualization proposed Feldman Pentland. The main reason that has kept perspectives separated concerns issue routine replication, which found space former while it remained shadows latter. Studies dealt with this of...
A simple Gram stain evaluation for the diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis was assessed in comparison to Nugent's method. The sensitivity (90%), specificity (94%), positive and negative predictive values (90% and 94%), and good interobserver agreement obtained indicate that the test method can be performed reliably in the routine clinical microbiology laboratory.
AbstractBovine tuberculosis (BTB) remains an important economic and zoonotic problem in Latin America. Traditionally, the fight against BTB is initiated by the implementation of routine diagnostic tests for certification of free properties. The diagnosis of BTB can be made by direct and indirect methods, in which we can mention clinical, post mortem, histopathological, immunological, bacteriolo...
There are some rare but probable devastating complications following any rhinoplasty. Charlin’s syndrome is a typical one. It is completely related to the external nasal nerve. In this report, we are presenting a 21-year-old female with signs and symptoms of Charlin’s syndrome, persisting for 4 years after a routine septorhinoplasty operation. Surgery was uneventful and the patient ...
Microbiology laboratories in Alberta, Canada, were surveyed to determine the quantitative interpretive criteria used to routinely read and report Gram stains. There was a wide variability in the quantitative reporting criteria cited for both cells and bacteria, with only 11 of 32 (34.4%) laboratories surveyed using the criteria recommended by the external proficiency-testing program. Lack of st...
Results: Out of a total of 1970 specimens, 1094 (55.5 %) were positive by culture. A total of 1462 strains were isolated: 753 Gram positive (Gram+), 661 Gram negative (Gram-) and 48 anaerobic bacteria. The number of specimens yielding one, two or more different strains was 788, 244 and 62, respectively. Gram + bacteria, in 44.7 % of positive samples were a single isolate. The most commonly isol...
A five-center study was conducted with the aim of determining how reproducibly expectorated sputa and tracheal aspirates could be sampled when preparing Gram-stained smears and inoculating cultures. With both specimen types, excessive variation was noted among Gram stain results obtained from replicate smears. Less variation was noted among culture results, especially with tracheal aspirates.
