Scrub typhus is a vector-borne disease carried by the chigger mite. The aetiological agent is the rickettsia Orientia tsutsugamushi, which is endemic to several countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including China [1]. It is also a travelassociated disease [2] and of great importance among military personnel [3,4]. During the Second World War, scrub typhus was associated with a higher case fat...

Introduction Scrub typhus is an infectious disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, a tiny parasite about the size of bacteria that belongs to the family Rickettsiaceae. Scrub typhus was first described by Hashimoto from Japan in 1899 (1). The term scrub is used because of the type of vegetation (terrain between woods and clearings) that harbours the vector; however, the name is not entirely c...

PURPOSE On the main island of Taiwan, a higher risk of scrub typhus infection has been reported in endemic clusters in Southeastern Taiwan and in mountainous township areas. However, research on health care problems associated with scrub typhus in Taiwanese ethnic peoples is limited. This study employs spatial analysis of areal data to determine spatial features related to scrub typhus and the ...

To determine prevalence of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome in South Korea, we examined serum samples from patients with fever and insect bite history in scrub typhus-endemic areas. During the 2013 scrub typhus season, prevalence of this syndrome among patients suspected of having scrub typhus was high (23.0%), suggesting possible co-infection.

BACKGROUND Scrub typhus is a vector-borne zoonotic disease that can be life-threatening. There are no licensed vaccines, or vector control efforts in place. Despite increasing awareness in endemic regions, the public health burden and global distribution of scrub typhus remains poorly known. METHODS We systematically reviewed all literature from public health records, fever studies and report...

Scrub typhus occurs in almost all parts of India and is endemic1. Many researchers have reported the profile of scrub typhus from various parts of India with diagnosis based on IgM ELISA2-4. Eschar is pathognomonic for rickettsiosis including scrub typhus, but its presence has not been reported as a marker of disease severity. Kim et al5 found absence of eschar to have prognostic significance i...

Renal failure caused by scrub typhus is known to be reversible. In most cases, renal function is almost fully restored after appropriate antibiotic treatment. A 71-year-old man was diagnosed with scrub typhus complicated by renal failure. A renal biopsy revealed histopathologic findings consistent with acute tubulointerstitial nephritis. Renal function did not improve 18 months after discharge ...

Scrub typhus is a rickettsial infection caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi that belongs to the family Rickettsiaceae and transmitted by some species of trombiculid mites "chiggers", particularly a Leptotrombidium deliense. A necrotic eschar at the inoculating site of the mite is pathognomic of Scrub typhus. Scrub typhus is a zoonosis and is a widespread disease in Asia and Pacific Islands. Fever ...

BACKGROUND Scrub typhus is a common cause of fever in parts of South East and Southern Asia. Little is known about the disease burden in Vietnam. METHODS A 2-year observational study of scrub typhus at a tertiary referral hospital in northern Vietnam was carried out. Diagnosis was based on a single serological test in patients with suggestive clinical symptoms. RESULTS Scrub typhus was diag...

Scrub typhus (caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi) and murine typhus (caused by Rickettsia typhi) cause up to 28% of febrile episodes in Thailand and Laos. The current understanding of coagulation and inflammation in the pathogenesis of these clinically very similar vasculotropic diseases is limited. This study compared human in vivo changes in 15 coagulation, inflammation and endothelial activati...
