The distribution of galanin-containing nervous elements in the chicken pancreas was investigated by use of immunohistochemical method. Galanin-immunoreactive nerve fibres formed a perivascular plexus and a dense network in the subepithelial layer of secretory ducts. The muscle layers of secretory ducts were also supplied with galanin-immunoreactive nerve fibres. The exocrine pancreas received a...
The submandibular glands of adult female and male Japanese wood mice (Apodemus ainu ainu Tokuda) were studied histochemically using toluidine blue (pH 2.5, 4.1 and 7.0, McIlvaine), PAS reaction, Millon's reaction for tyrosine, p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde for tryptophan, and substrate film techniques for amylase and protease. The glands were also examined ultrastructurally and ultracytochemicall...
Bronchial glands have been regarded as modified salivary glands. It is well known that there no previous reviews concerning the antigenic profile of the bronchial wall. The aim of this study is a systematic survey of the antigenic profile and to describe the histology of normal human bronchial glands. Six formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded surgical specimens were studied using a panel of 22 poly...
The anterior testicular ducts of squamates transport sperm from the seminiferous tubules to the ductus deferens. These ducts consist of the rete testis, ductuli efferentes, and ductus epididymis. Many histological and a few ultrastructural studies of the squamate reproductive tract exist, but none concern the Hydrophiidae, the sea snakes and sea kraits. In this study, we describe the anterior t...
We studied the anatomy of a rare narrow endemic species belonging to the Slovenian fl ora – Hladnikia pastinacifolia Rchb. Hladnikia is a monotypic genus with distinct taxonomic position within the Apiaceae family. The anatomical characteristics revealed by light and fl uorescence microscopy provided new insights regarding the pollen, leaf and root characteristics of H. pastinacifolia, improvin...
This article suggests that cell lineages of defined phenotype arise within gastrointestinal epithelia exposed to acid hypersecretion-the ulcer-associated cell lineage (UACL), "gastric metaplasia" and that of Barrett's esophagus. Detailed study of both the histogenesis and secretory peptide phenotype of the UACL and gastric metaplasia reveal an origin from newly-formed ducts and Brunner's gland ...
Urogastrone has been localised by immunostaining to granules of the cells of human duodenal (Brunner's) glands and their ducts and of acinar cells in the human submandibular gland. The immunoreactive peptide is present in large quantities in duodenal glands and their secretory ducts. Urogastrone or human epidermal growth factor promotes cellular proliferation in vivo as well as in vitro and inh...
Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is characterized by antimitochondrial autoantibodies (AMAs) in patients' sera and histologically by chronic nonsuppurative destructive cholangitis in small bile ducts, eventually followed by extensive bile duct loss and biliary cirrhosis. The autoimmune-mediated pathogenesis of bile duct lesions, including the significance of AMAs, triggers of the autoimmune proc...
Three cases of oncocytoma (oxyphil adenoma) of the lacrimal caruncle are reported. Transmission electron microscopy performed on one of the lesions confirms the tumour to be composed of cells containing abnormally large numbers of mitochondria. It is suggested that these tumours arise from accessory lacrimal glands or their secretory ducts.
