Bacterial and archaeal diversity was examined in a sediment core from Lake Bonney, Antarctica. Members of the Archaea showed both low abundance and diversity, whereas bacterial diversity was moderately high and some phyla were fairly abundant, even in geologically old samples. Microbial diversity correlated with sample texture and differed in silty and coarse samples.
Side scan sonar in low-cost 'fishfinder' systems has become popular in aquatic ecology and sedimentology for imaging submerged riverbed sediment at coverages and resolutions sufficient to relate bed texture to grain-size. Traditional methods to map bed texture (i.e. physical samples) are relatively high-cost and low spatial coverage compared to sonar, which can continuously image several kilome...
soil erosion is an abstruse phenomenon which contains segregation and transmission of soil particles and runoff from rainfall and infiltration. runoff and sediment generation was compared using rainfall simulator in grassland (st. parviflora-br. tomentellus) and shrubland (as. parrowianus-as. gossipinus). for this purpose, vegetation map was supplied for two vegetation types four main aspects a...
AGNPS, which is an agricultural non-point source pollution model, was used in combination with GIS tools to assess the feasibility of water quality effluent trading for phosphorus, in Morrow Lake sub-watershed, Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA. GIS software packages (Arc/Info and ArcView) were used to prepare data input for the model and post process the results. The sensitivity of AGNPS parameters was...
Interpretation of unconsolidated Quaternary sedimentary core is difficult if key diagnostic features are obscured or not present, therefore traditional facies analysis challenging. However, sediment texture remains a universal attribute which can be used to interpret core. Here we present an automated classification workflow implements Extreme Gradient Boosting and Bayesian Optimization hyperpa...
In tropical regions, different species of fiddler crabs coexist on the mangrove floor, which sometimes makes it difficult to define species-specific habitat by visual inspection. The aim of this study is to find key environmental parameters which affect the distribution of fiddler crabs and to determine the habitats in which each species was most abundant. Crabs were collected from 19 sites wit...
[1] In a drainage network, sediment is transferred through a series of channel/valley segments (natural sediment storage reservoirs) that are distinguished from their neighbors by their particular capacity to store and transport sediment. We propose that the sediment transport capacity of each reservoir is a unique positive function of storage volume, which influences sediment mobility and avai...
Prevention and estimation of soil erosion from forest roads requires an understanding of how road design and maintenance affect sediment production. Seventyfour plots were installed on forest roads in the Oregon Coast Range to examine the relationship between sediment production and road attributes such as distance between culverts, road slope, soil texture, and cutslope height. An additional c...
Bedload sheets are low-amplitude bedforms the are formed by sorting patterns in mixed-size sediment (gravel or gravel-sand mixtures). The features have been functionally linked to dune forms developed in sandy sediments and gravel dunes formed in river channels. There have been a number of attempts to place bedload sheets on extended versions of the bedform phase diagrams used to predict sand b...
