In this article, ultrasonic guided wave propagation and interaction with the rivet hole cracks has been formulated using closed-form analytical solution while the local damage interaction, scattering, and mode conversion have been obtained from finite element analysis. The rivet hole cracks (damage) in the plate structure gives rise to the non-axisymmetric scattering of Lamb wave, as well as sh...

An approach of Green’s function is adopted to solve the inhomogeneous linear differential equations representing wave equations in piezo-composite materials. In particular, transference of horizontally polarised shear (SH) waves is considered in bedded structure comprising of porous-piezo electric layer lying over a heterogeneous half-space. Propagation of SH-waves is considered to be influence...

A numerical study of second-harmonic (SH) generation in a corrugated polymer waveguide is performed with a rigorous electromagnetic theory. Comparison with experiment reveals the role of losses inside the waveguide-small losses do not significantly affect the nonresonant response and reduce the resonant enhancement of SH generation. High losses can lead to the opposite effect-instead of enhance...

A simple mechanistic model, with time-independent planetary wave forcing at the lower boundary, is used to investigate the observed differences between the Northern Hemisphere (NH) and Southern Hemisphere (SH) stratospheric evolution. Considered here are differences in both the zonal mean and the zonal wavenumber 1 structure of the winter vortex throughout its seasonal evolution. In particular,...

Electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) are well suited to generating and detecting a variety of different ultrasonic wavemodes, without the need for couplant, they can be operated through some coatings. EMATs used generate shear horizontal (SH) waves, which show promise fast screening wall thinning other defects. However, commercial SH-wave not suitable robotic implementation on ferritic ...

By extending GaAs dielectric posts with a large second-order nonlinear susceptibility through the holes of a subwavelength metallic hole array coupled to the metal surface-plasma wave, strong second harmonic (SH) signal is observed. The SH signal is strengthened as a result of the enhanced electromagnetic fields inside the hole apertures.

Shear horizontal (SH) ultrasound guided waves are being used in an increasing number of non-destructive testing (NDT) applications. One advantage SH waves have over some wave types, is their ability to propagate around curved surfaces with little energy loss; to understand the geometries around which they could propagate, the wave reflection must be quantified. A 0.83mm thick aluminium sheet wa...

The slowly varying amplitude approximation that is widely adopted in nonlinear optics is appraised by the transfer-matrix method. Rigorous solution for second harmonic generation in nonlinear optical superlattices shows that this approximation is invalid when the reflection of the second harmonic ~SH! wave from the crystal interface cannot be neglected. When the modulation period of the superla...

[1] We simultaneously invert for the velocity and attenuation structure of the North American mantle from a mixed data set: SH wave traveltime and amplitude anomalies, SS wave differential traveltime anomalies, and Love wave fundamental mode phase delays. All data are measured for multiple frequency bands, and finite frequency sensitivity kernels are used to explain the observations. In the res...

Smart home (SH) services promote the comfort, convenience, security, entertainment, healthcare, education and communication of people in their home environments. Despite radical enhancements envisioned to peoples’ lives, the SH market has remained a niche for more than three decades. Yet, recent fast-paced developments, including ubiquitous computing, miniaturization of microelectronic componen...
