THE PREVALENCE OF INJURY PREVENTION PROGRAMS CONTINUES TO INCREASE, BUT THE INJURY RATES REMAIN CONSTANT. THESE PROGRAMS USE A BLOCK PRACTICE SCHEDULE AND CLOSED-SKILL EXERCISES, BUT GAMES ARE RANDOM AND INVOLVE OPEN SKILLS. TO IMPROVE THE EFFICACY OF THE NEUROMUSCULAR TRAINING PROGRAMS AND TREND THE INJURY RATE DOWNWARD, THESE PROGRAMS SHOULD INCORPORATE MOTOR LEARNING THEORY. BY INCORPORATING...

Observable structure of variability presents a window into the underlying processes of skill acquisition, especially when the task affords a manifold of solutions to the desired task result. This study examined skill acquisition by analyzing variability in both its distributional and temporal structure. Using a virtual throwing task, data distributions were analyzed by the Tolerance, Noise, Cov...

BACKGROUND Studies demonstrate that both doctors and patients may use adrenaline auto-injector improperly and the usage skills are improved by training. In this study, we aimed to determine the appropriate frequency of training to maintain skills for adrenaline auto-injector use. METHODS We invited all interns of 2011-2012 training period. At baseline, all participants were given theoretical ...

Individual differences in skill acquisition are influenced by several architectural factors. According to Ackerman’s theory, general intelligence, speed of proceduralization and psychomotor speed influence different stages of skill acquisition. The ACT-R cognitive architecture allows for direct testing of this theory by manipulating parameters that correspond to these factors. The present study...

One of the primary benefits of international trade in a low-income context is the presumed ability, through trade, to access higher levels of technology through imports. Despite this, very little research has been done on international trade in a low-income (as opposed to middle-income) context, and even less concretely exploring the role of imports, largely because of the paucity of data avail...

We introduce skill chaining, a skill discovery method for reinforcement learning agents in continuous domains. Skill chaining produces chains of skills leading to an end-of-task reward. We demonstrate experimentally that skill chaining is able to create appropriate skills in a challenging continuous domain and that doing so results in performance gains.

Current concerns over reforming engineering education have focused attention on helping students develop skills and an adaptive expertise. Phenomenological guidelines for instruction along these lines can be understood as arising out of an emerging theory of thinking and learning built on results in the neural, cognitive, and behavioral sciences. We outline this framework and consider some of i...
