SUMMARY Spontaneous lateral sphenoid cephaloceles arise from bony defects in the lateral sphenoid, in the absence of predisposing factors such as trauma, surgery, mass, or congenital skull base malformation. We reviewed CT and MR imaging findings and clinical data of 26 patients with spontaneous lateral sphenoid cephaloceles to better understand anatomic contributions to pathogenesis, varying c...

The lateral limit of endoscopic endonasal surgery has yet to be defined. The aim of this study was to investigate the lateral limit of endoscopic endonasal surgery at the level of the sphenoid sinus. Access from the sphenoid sinus to the middle cranial fossa through the cavernous sinus triangles was evaluated by cadaver dissection. Anatomical analysis demonstrated that the medial temporal dura ...

Intraosseous lipoma is an uncommon mesenchymal tumor that is frequently found in appendecular skeleton. In extremely rare conditions, it can appear in sphenoid bone, and only 2 cases have been described in literature until now. We present a case of lipoma in the body of the sphenoid bone mimicking sphenoid sinus tumor. A 16-year-old man presented to Department of Otorhinolaryngology with a comp...

The sphenoid sinus occupies a central location in transsphenoidal surgery (TSS). It is important to identify relevant anatomical landmarks to enter the sphenoid sinus and sellar region properly. The aim of this study was to identify anatomical landmarks and their value in single-nostril endonasal TSS. A retrospective study was performed to review 148 cases of single-nostril endonasal TSS for pi...

INTRODUCTION The paranasal sinuses mucoceles are benign expansive cystic lesions that occur rarely in the sphenoid sinus and contain mucous material enclosed by cylindrical pseudostratified epithelium. OBJECTIVE To report one case of sphenoid sinus mucocele that occurred with headache and was submitted to surgical treatment through endonasal endoscopy approach. CASE REPORT 59-year-old male ...

Meningiomas are slow-growing benign lesions that constitute ∼ 25% of primary intracranial tumours. Extracranial meningioma of the sphenoid sinus is extremely rare and may arise from ectopic arachnoid nests left behind during embryonic development. We present the case of a 61-year-old woman with left oculomotor nerve paralysis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a 43 × 31 × 33 mm mass in ...

For operations of the pituitary glands, the most subtle method is an intervention through the paranasal and especially through the sphenoid sinus. To avoid dangerous interference with adjacent organs and nerves, the surgeon has to orient himself in the very small sphenoid cavity and navigate across the hollow space to break through the sellar floor to the pituitary gland above. Especially in re...

BACKGROUND The anatomical structures of anterior area of sphenoid sinus are observed by CT reconstruction of radiographic images in some studies. However, the detailed anatomic information of the extended transsphenoidal approach is still incomplete. METHOD Fifteen cases (30 sides) of adult cadaveric skulls and 20 cases (40 sides) of bleached adult dry skulls were observed and measured under ...
