INTRODUCTION Infection of the spinal column is rare, and often recognized and treated too late. Spondylodiscitis is osteomyelitis of the spine and can cause severe symptoms. Hospital mortality is in the region of 2% to 17%. METHODS Selective literature review and results of the authors' own research. RESULTS The incidence of pyogenic spondylodiscitis is around 1 : 250 000, which represents ...
All over the globe, the incidence of vertebral infection is rising. Nowadays, compared to tuberculous variety, pyogenic spondylodiscitis incidence is high. The increase in the susceptible population and improved diagnostics summatively contributed to this. In clinical grounds, differentiation of pyogenic and tuberculous spondylodiscitis is well defined. Enterobacter agglomerans is a hospital co...
Purpose/Aim: The purpose was to determine the distinguishing of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for brucellar spondylodiscitis in cervical or thoracic segments. Materials and methods: 20 among 260 brucellosis patients, aged 32-63 y old (average, 50.3 y), were chosen. We diagnosed according to epidemiological history, clinical symptoms, Brucellar standard agglutination testing, and MRI findings...
We report on two cases of infective spondylodiscitis caused by Gemella haemolysans in otherwise healthy patients. This organism has only rarely been identified as a cause of bone and joint infection, with only two previous reports of infective spondylodiscitis. We describe the clinical features, investigations and treatment options.
Background Infectious spondylodiscitis is a serious and morbid disease. It often suspected after magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the spine. Suspected requires further workup, in which computed tomography (CT)-guided needle biopsy plays crucial role. Objectives The aim this study was to examine yield CT-guided patients with infectious spondylodiscitis, identify factors associated successful p...
Spondylodiscitis has gained attention lately because of an alarming and progressive increasing of its incidence, reflecting the rise of percentage of the elderly and immunocompromised people, and the implementation in practice of advanced diagnostic methods. This review will focus on the etiology, diagnostic challenges, and treatment strategies in spondylodiscitis. The incidence of spondylodisc...
Paraspinal abscess and spondylodiscitis due to Citrobacter koseri is a very rare condition. We report a remarkable case of Citrobacter koseri bacteraemia complicated by paraspinal abscess and spondylodiscitis in a patient who has successfully been treated in our hospital. Our patient demonstrates one of the common challenges in the practice of infectious disease medicine, wherein an innocuous p...
OBJECTIVE To determine the frequency, clinical features, and radiological and bone scintigraphic changes of spondylodiscitis in patients with SAPHO (synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis). METHODS The study was retrospective. Data from patients with the diagnostic criteria of SAPHO syndrome were analysed for clinical features, biological data (HLA B antigen), and pelvic and ...
A 62-year-old man with amphotericin B-resistant Candida krusei spondylodiscitis, following an episode of candidemia caused by the same strain, was successfully treated with caspofungin plus voriconazole. Amphotericin B fungicidal concentrations were better predictors of the clinical outcome than were MICs. This is the first case of C. krusei spondylodiscitis reported in the literature.
vertebral osteomyelitis, or spondylodiscitis, is a rare disease with increasing prevalence in recent years due to a greater number of spinal surgical procedures, nosocomial bacteraemia, an aging population and intravenous drug addiction. haematogenous infection is the most common cause of spondylodiscitis. we report a 47-year-old man diagnosed with escherichia coli spondylodiscitis. the patient...
