We report on a healthy 39-year-old man who developed spontaneous pneumomediastinum during a soccer game without a traumatic impact. Chest radiography and CT demonstrated the extensive pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema. Treatment of this rare condition is conservative and prognosis is excellent.

A minimally invasive technique using fenestrated angiocatheters has been described in adult literature for the treatment of extensive subcutaneous emphysema. Here we report a 30 month old infant who developed extensive subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum, which was relieved by application of microdrainage catheters.

We report an adolescent with recurrent bilateral parotitis with pneumoparotitis and subcutaneous emphysema due to self pneumoinsufflation by a Valsalva like maneuver. Investigations for recurrent parotitis did not yield any clue. His la belle indifference, prolonged school absence and the presence of sibling rivalry helped us identify the psychological cause.

During an outbreak of measles in a refugee camp in Ethiopia, 9 patients (age range 4 months to 18 years) were diagnosed with subcutaneous emphysema. Incidence of this rare complication of measles in this refugee camp was higher than previously reported. We hypothesize that the high incidence is most likely related to poor physical state of the refugee population with high rates of malnutrition.
