epidemic keratoconjunctivits (ekc) caused by certain species d human adenoviruses (ads) is a highly contagious severe disease involving both the conjunctiva and cornea. the hallmark of this disease is subepithelial infiltration of leukocytes, which results in corneal opacities that may persist fo months or even years. in this case study of a 6-month old infant, we report symblepharon formation,...
BACKGROUND Treatment of recurrent pterygium associated with symblepharon usually involves the use of tissue grafting and/or the intraoperative application of mitomycin C (MMC). For the graft, a conjunctival/limbal autograft and/or amniotic membrane may be used. This generally requires extra technical skills and assistance, an increase in the cost and duration of surgery, and a more extensive an...
BACKGROUND The therapeutic effects of allogeneic cultivated limbal epithelial transplantation (CLET) for symblephara at different degrees caused by ocular burns were evaluated in this study. METHODS A series of interventional cases were involved in this retrospective study. Eighty eyes (80 patients) with symblephara underwent CLET and the success rates of surgical treatment as well as corneal...
PURPOSE Fornix contracture is an obstacle for fitting a prosthesis in blind or enucleated patients, and may lead to disfigurement and psychological issues. This study evaluates the efficacy of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) for fornix reconstruction with the aim of better retention of the ocular prosthesis. METHODS This non-comparative interventional case series includes eighteen bli...
A 24-year-old male patient presented to us with diminution of vision in both eyes with watering and photophobia for the past 8 years. General physical examination showed short stature and poikiloderma. Ocular findings include photophobia with reflex tearing, dry eye, cicatricial ectropion, symblepharon approaching pupillary area of cornea, and multiple superficial punctuate erosions on the corn...
Amniotic membrane transplantation to reconstruct the conjunctival surface in cases of chemical burn.
PURPOSE To evaluate the efficiency of preserved human amniotic membrane transplantation for conjunctival surface reconstruction in cases of chemical burn. METHODS Preserved amniotic membrane transplantation was performed in 6 patients (6 eyes) having symblepharon and fornix insufficiency due to chemical burn. Amniotic membrane was sutured to the intact conjunctiva after the fibrotic tissue wa...
Rothmund-Thomson syndrome (RTS) is a rare dermatosis with about 300 cases reported to date. The authors describe two siblings with RTS and inflammatory conjunctival disease featuring fornix shortening and symblepharon as well as palpebral disease with sparse eyelashes. These cases demonstrate RTS ocular surface findings different to those usually described.
