intramuscular cavernous hemangiomas represent less than 1% of all hemangiomas. typical presentation is a soft-tissue mass and/or pain without cutaneous changes. whereas calcification of hemangiomas is common; ossification of these lesions is very rare. we describe a case of ossified intramuscular hemangioma of quadriceps presented with painless knee extension contracture and thigh mass.

Accepted 20 August 1997 A 50-year-old woman presented with a 5-cm diameter mass of rubbery consistency, loosely adherent to the skin, not tender, not adherent to the underlying tissues, located in the medeal site of the right thigh. The patient was first aware of the mass 10 years ago, when it was 1 cm in diameter. She lived in a rural area and had a dog as a pet. Laboratory examinations were w...

RESEARCHDESIGNANDMETHODSdOne-hundred three participants were randomized to receive either PRT or sham exercise 3 days per week for 12months. Homeostatic model of assessment 2 (HOMA2-IR) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were used as indices of IR and glucose homeostasis. Skeletal muscle mass (SkMM) and total fat mass were assessed using bioelectrical impedance. Visceral adipose tissue, mid-th...

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is reported to be inferior to computed tomography (CT) to measure changes in appendicular soft tissue composition. We compared CT- and DEXA-measured thigh muscle and fat mass to evaluate the random and systematic discrepancies between these two methods. Thigh skeletal muscle area (single-slice CT) was suboptimally (r(2) = 0.74, P < 0.0001) related to DEXA...

To emphasise that hydatid cyst disease can present as a soft tissue mass even in an unusual site like the thigh, we report the case of a 21-year male patient who presented to Surgical Unit IV, Civil Hospital, Karachi, with a slow growing cystic swelling on the medial aspect of the left thigh. Based on serology and imaging, a diagnosis of solitary subcutaneous hydatid cyst thigh was made and cys...

Three measures of locomotory performance and a series of variables thought to affect performance were measured in the iguanid lizard Ctenosaura similis. Burst speed is mass independent; however, endurance time at 1 km/h (EN-DUR) and maximal distance run (MAX DIS) scale as M0.3. Standard and maximal rates of O2 consumption (VO2max) scale as M0.9; VO2max averages 10-fold greater than standard met...

The purpose of this investigation was to (a) examine how asymmetry in lower extremity lean mass influenced force and power asymmetry during jumping, (b) determine how power and force asymmetry affected jump height, and (c) report normative values in collegiate athletes. Force and power were assessed from each limb using bilateral force plates during a countermovement jump in 167 division 1 athl...

The ontogeny of endothermy in birds is associated with disproportionate growth of thermogenic organs and increased mitochondrial oxidative capacity. However, no similar study has been made of the development of these traits in ectotherms. For comparison, we therefore investigated the metabolism, growth and muscle mitochondrial function in hatchlings of a turtle and a crocodilian, two ectotherms...
