Introduction: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are compounds with antimicrobial properties that are studied widely due to the development of resistance of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics. In the present study, the toxicity and antimicrobial effects of two natural monomeric peptides (S3 and S∆3) were compared with S3-S∆3 hybrids and S3 tetramers. Material & Methods: Protein hybrids (S∆3S3-2mer-G...

Objective(s): Scorpion venom has toxic effects on mammals, insects and crustaceans.  Toxicogenic peptides are major contributors to the scorpion venom, which make it toxic. The Hemiscorpius lepturus (H. lepturus) is one of the most common scorpion bites agent, and responsible for 95% of scorpion bite deaths cases in Iran.Materials and Methods:</strong...

The design of drugs with bioinformatics methods to identify proteins and peptides with a specific toxic action is increasingly recurrent. Here, we identify toxic proteins towards the influenza A virus subtype H1N1 located at the UniProt database. Our quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) approach is based on the analysis of the linear peptide sequence with the so-called Polarity I...

BACKGROUND hGlyrichin is a novel human antimicrobial peptide rich in glycine. The previous study of known human antimicrobial peptides indicated that in an eligible range, the greater corresponding antibacterial activity was consisted with the shorter peptide sequence. FINDINGS Two peptides named pCM19 and pCM12 were synthesized and the antibacterial activity assay results showed that these p...

Certain pathogenic bacteria produce and release toxic peptides to ensure either nutrient availability or evasion from the immune system. These peptides are also toxic to the producing bacteria that utilize dedicated ABC transporters to provide self-immunity. The ABC transporter McjD exports the antibacterial peptide MccJ25 in Escherichia coli Our previously determined McjD structure provided so...

The amyloid peptides Aβ(40) and Aβ(42) of Alzheimer's disease are thought to contribute differentially to the disease process. Although Aβ(42) seems more pathogenic than Aβ(40), the reason for this is not well understood. We show here that small alterations in the Aβ(42):Aβ(40) ratio dramatically affect the biophysical and biological properties of the Aβ mixtures reflected in their aggregation ...

We demonstrate here a strategy for enhanced antibacterial activity against microbial strains by the assembly of antimicrobial peptides with a temperature-responsive polymeric carrier. The assembly complex was less toxic to human cells and more stable to enzymatic cleavage. This work may provide a promising drug delivery system for antimicrobial peptides.
