Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is fatal if untreated and causes severe morbidity. In Tanzania HAT is caused by Trypanosoma b. rhodesiense. Trypanosomiasis in livestock is the major impediment to livestock farming and it limits the full potential of agricultural development in Tanzania. This study was undertaken in Kasulu district of Kigoma region, an area that is endemic for both human and...
African trypanosomiasis remains a serious health concern across large areas of sub-Saharan Africa, despite several decades of research. As well as causing sleeping sickness in humans, trypanosomes are responsible for significant disease in livestock. The combination of human and livestock disease makes these parasites a serious impediment to agricultural and economic advancement in the affected...
Human African trypanosomiasis has not been reported in Nigeria since 2012. Nevertheless, limitations of current surveillance programs mean that undetected infections may persist. We report a recent case of stage 2 trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense acquired in Nigeria and imported into the United Kingdom.
Animal trypanosomiasis, caused by the members of subgenus Trypanozoon ( Trypanosoma brucei brucei, T. evansi and equiperdum ), has reduced animal productivity leading to significant negative economic impacts in endemic regions. Due limited drug discovery emergence drug-resistance over many recent decades, novel effective compounds against trypanosomiasis are urgently required. This study was co...

African trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense has not been reported in Italy. We report 2 cases diagnosed in the summer of 2004. Theses cases suggest an increased risk for expatriates working in trypanosomiasis-endemic countries. Travel medicine clinics should be increasingly aware of this potentially fatal disease.
We describe a case of multiorgan dysfunction secondary to Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense infection acquired on safari in Zambia. This case was one of several recently reported to ProMED-mail in persons who had traveled to this region. Trypanosomiasis remains rare in travelers but should be considered in febrile patients who have returned from trypanosomiasis-endemic areas of Africa.
To investigate the epidemiology of human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, 2 entomologic surveys were conducted in 2005. Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and human-blood meals were found in tsetse fly midguts, which suggested active disease transmission. Vector control should be used to improve human African trypanosomiasis control efforts.
