The serological response to Trichosporon sp. was examined by the immunoblot technique. Antibodies to a range of antigens (200 to 16 kilodaltons) were detectable in three patients with invasive Trichosporon beigelii or Blastoschizomyces capitatus infections and 10 uninfected controls. High levels of preexisting antibodies may contribute to the rarity of systemic infections.

The emergence of this yeast in an area in which it is not known to be endemic should alert clinicians caring for immunocompromised patients outside the Mediterranean region to consider infections caused by unfamiliar fungal pathogens.

Fruit and soil yeasts isolated from the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforests and an organic farm were screened for killer activity against yeasts. Killer yeasts were then tested against the phytopathogen Moniliophthora perniciosa (syn. Crinipellis perniciosa) and a Dipodascus capitatus strain and a Candida sp strain inhibited its growth.
