Tympanoplasty now frequently uses cartilage to repair bone lysis in the external auditory canal (EAC) and to reinforce the tympanic membrane. Once in place, however, the cartilage may complicate ossiculoplasty by obstructing visualization of the stapedial region. Posterior tympanotomy, when included in the tympanoplasty procedure, may provide an interesting means of positioning the ossiculoplasty.

BACKGROUND Tympanoplasty in children is a current and controversial theme. The success of tympanoplasty traditionally has been measured only by the post-operative integrity of the graft. Yet, there are other variables that may be used to determine success. The objectives of the present work were to analyze which factors are predictive of successful tympanoplasty in pediatric patients and to con...

BACKGROUND Nausea and vomiting are common complications of anesthesia and surgery. Patients undergoing tympanoplasty are exposed to a higher risk of postoperative nausea vomiting (PONV). These complications may alter the results of reconstruction and anatomical alignments. Numerous antiemetics have been studied to prevent and treat PONV in patients undergoing tympanoplasty. The aim of this stud...

BACKGROUND The atelectatic tympanic membrane poses a significant (and age old) management challenge. Although often without sequelae, the under-ventilated middle ear and retracted drum can progress to ossicular erosion, hearing loss, or cholesteatoma formation. Management of this problem remains difficult given that the etiology of the atelectatic membrane is not completely understood. It is un...

INTRODUCTION Same-day closure of bilateral tympanic membrane perforations is a quick and more comfortable procedure for the patients. However, conventional bilateral same-day tympanoplasty or myringoplasty has been rarely performed because of the theoretical risk of postoperative complications. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the advantages and outcomes of bilateral simultaneous endoscopic cartilage ty...

The current study compares outcomes of modified cartilage shield tympanoplasty (CST) with temporalis fascia tympanoplasty in type I procedures in Indian patients. Graft uptake rates are better with the CST technique and hearing results are almost equivalent with both techniques except at 8000 Hz where improvement in hearing was found better with the use of temporalis fascia alone. The CST techn...
