In recent years, there has been a growing interest in anticancer potential of valproic acid (VPA) resulting from inhibition of histone deacetylase activity. The aim of our study was to evaluate the influence of valproic acid and cisplatin (CPT) on the growth rate of human melanoma cell lines: A375 (melanotic) and C32 (amelanotic). Both tested drugs decreased cell proliferation in a dose-depende...

Valproic acid (VPA) is one of the widely prescribed antiepileptic drugs in children with multiple indications. VPA-induced coagulopathy may occur and constitute a pharmacological and practical challenge affecting pre-operative evaluation and management of patients receiving VPA therapy. This review summarizes the different studies documenting the incidence, severity and available recommendation...

INTRODUCTION We aimed to investigate the effect of valproic acid (VPA) on NKG2D ligand expression in human renal carcinoma cell lines and to investigate the mechanisms. MATERIAL AND METHODS Different concentrations of VPA from 0.5 mM to 8.0 mM were applied to 786-O and ACHN cell lines, respectively. Cell viability after treatment with VPA was determined by flow cytometry (FCM). Real-time PCR ...

The pyruvate uptake rate in inverted submitochondrial vesicles prepared from rat liver was optimized and further characterized; the potential inhibitory effects of the anticonvulsive drug valproic acid or 2-n-propyl-pentanoic acid (VPA), Delta4-valproic acid or 2-n-propyl-4-pentenoic acid and the respective coenzyme A (CoA) conjugates were studied in the presence of a proton gradient. All teste...

We report 2 children with a history of epilepsy in whom valproic acid (VPA) withdrawal was identified as a potential cause of hallucinations. After a restart of VPA, the hallucinations disappeared. We suggest mechanisms for the occurrence of the hallucinations and a possible control of a predisposition to hallucinations by VPA.

UNLABELLED Reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) from latency into the lytic phase of its life cycle allows the virus to spread among cells and between hosts. Valproic acid (VPA) inhibits initiation of the lytic cycle in EBV-infected B lymphoma cells. While VPA blocks viral lytic gene expression, it induces expression of many cellular genes, because it is a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibit...

Humans and various nonhuman primates respond negatively to inequity not in their favor (i.e., inequity aversion), when inequity between two individuals is introduced. Common marmosets, a highly prosocial species, further discriminated between human actors who reciprocated in social exchanges, and those who did not. Conversely, marmoset models of autism, induced via prenatal exposure to valproic...

BACKGROUND Comorbidities of epilepsy comprise some pain disorders, including acute nociceptive pain, therefore, antiepileptic drugs can prove efficacy in the management of this kind of pain albeit with several adverse reactions. The current study aimed to evaluate the modulatory effects of calcium channel blockers on the anticonvulsant and antinociceptive effects of valproic acid (VPA) in penty...

Valproic acid (VPA) is a clinically available histone deacetylase inhibitor with promising anticancer attributes. Recent studies have demonstrated the anticancer effects of VPA on prostate cancer cells. However, little is known about the differential effects of VPA between metastatic and non-metastatic prostate cancer cells and the relationship between the expression of metastasis suppressor pr...

Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable hematological disorder characterized by dysregulated proliferation of terminally differentiated plasma cells. Aberrant histone acetylation has been observed in the development of numerous malignancies. Histone deacetylase inhibitors such as valproic acid (VPA) are promising drugs for cancer therapy since they have been reported to have antiproliferative eff...
