A wavelength-tunable single-frequency fiber laser based on the spectral narrowing effect in a nonlinear semiconductor optical amplifier (NL-SOA) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The single-frequency operation is achieved based on the spectral narrowing effect resulted from the inverse four-wave mixing in a NL-SOA. By incorporating the NL-SOA in the fiber laser cavity, single-frequen...

We propose and analyze a new type of optical amplifier that is formed by addition of gain in the periodic cladding of a transverse Bragg resonance waveguide [Opt. Lett. 27, 936 (2002)]. Using the coupled-wave formalism, we calculate the mode profiles, the exponential gain constant, and, for comparison, the gain enhancement compared with those of conventional semiconductor optical amplifiers. In...

Ultrahigh-speed tuning of an extended-cavity semiconductor laser is demonstrated. The laser resonator comprises a unidirectional fiber-optic ring, a semiconductor optical amplifier as the gain medium, and a novel scanning filter based on a polygonal scanner. Variable tuning rates up to 1150 nm/ms (15.7-kHz repetition frequency) are demonstrated over a 70-nm wavelength span centered at 1.32 micr...

This work describes the construction of an ultra-compact narrowband fiber laser source for coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy tags, that is, addressing resonances deuterated molecules and alkyne tags in spectral range from 2080 to 2220 cm?1. A fast electronically tunable cw seed based on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) emitting around 1335 nm has been employed four-wave mi...

Tunable blue and ultraviolet single mode laser light has been generated by frequency quadrupling the output of a semiconductor laser with two successive frequency doubling stages. The laser source is based on a commercial high power semiconductor laser near 972 nm which combines a low power single mode master oscillator with a high power amplifier. The doubling stages consist of nonlinear cryst...

Erbium-doped fiber is a gain medium exhibiting homogeneous line broadening at room temperature, while a semiconductor optical amplifier has a dominant feature of inhomogeneous line broadening. In this work, a semiconductor optical amplifier is incorporated into the cavity of an erbium-doped fiber ring laser to form a hybrid gain medium. Theoretical analysis shows that such a gain medium support...

We report on a study of a 698 nm extended cavity semiconductor laser with intracavity narrowband optical feedback from a whispering gallery mode resonator. This laser comprises an ultrahigh-Q (>10(10)) resonator supporting stimulated Rayleigh scattering, a diffraction grating wavelength preselector, and a reflective semiconductor amplifier. Single longitudinal mode lasing is characterized with ...

The first monolithically integrated widely tunable wavelength converter, consisting of a Sampled-Grating Distributed-Bragg-Reflector laser and a semiconductor optical amplifier-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer, is reported. Static extinction ratios better than 19dB and 13 dB using electrical and optical control, respectively, were measured over a 22nm laser wavelength range.

We present an actively mode-locked fiber ring laser that uses a single active semiconductor optical amplifier device to provide both gain and gain modulation from an external optical pulse train. The laser source generated 4.3-ps pulses at 20 GHz over a 16-nm tuning range and is stable against environmental changes and simple to build.

We present a post-distortion linearization technique for semiconductor optical amplifier Mach-Zehnder interferometer (SOA-MZI) photonic sampler. The sampling source is an active mode-locked laser producing 12.6 ps-width pulses with repetition frequency of 10 GHz. mathematical model the presented and then evaluated quasi-static regime, i.e. continuous-wave signals, dynamic sinusoidal signals.
