Introduction: In recent years it has become evident that Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) reactivation can present as ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke or Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in immunocompetent immunocompromised patients. Both VZV cerebrovascular visceral manifestations may appear the absence of a cutaneous rash.

The influence of herpes zoster virus infection on cell-mediated and humoral immunity to varicella-zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex virus (HSV) was followed in 17 zoster patients from the first week to 6 months after start of eruptions. The clinical responses were registered and correlated to the immune responses. A significant depression in blast transformation on stimula...

An indirect peroxidase technique was developed for determination of IgA antibodies to varicella zoster virus (VZV). The antigen consisted of acetone-fixed trypsinised VZV-infected cells. Rabbit antihuman IgA peroxidase conjugate was used to detect human IgA antibodies bound to viral antigen. In parallel IgG antibodies to VZV were determined by an immunoperoxidase antibody to membrane antigen (I...

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is an exclusively human neurotropic alphaherpesvirus. Primary infection causes varicella (chickenpox), after which virus becomes latent in ganglionic neurons along the entire neuraxis. With advancing age or immunosuppression, cell-mediated immunity to VZV declines and virus reactivates to cause zoster (shingles), which can occur anywhere on the body. Skin lesions re...

The varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes two diseases. The primary VZV infection, known as chickenpox, typically occurs during childhood. Herpes zoster infection results later in life from reactivation of VZV in the dorsal root ganglia. Herpes zoster characteristically results in a rash with a unilateral dermatomal distribution, which usually resolves within 2 to 4 weeks. If the infection does n...

Pooled monoclonal antibodies to varicella-zoster virus (VZV) were used as "detector" antibodies in a four-phase enzyme immunofluorescence assay for determination of immunoglobulin M (IgM), IgA, and IgG antibodies to VZV. Polyclonal antisera specific for heavy chains of human IgM, IgA, and IgG were employed as "capture" antibodies on the solid phase. The antibody class capture assay (ACCA) for V...

background and objectives: varicella–zoster virus (vzv) is a human herpes virus that usually attacks young children and commonly causes chicken pox (varicella). following primary infection, a lifelong latent infection is established. the virus often reactivates during adulthood or senesces to cause shingles (zoster). little is known regarding the genotypes of varicella in kuwait. the aim of thi...

Background and Aims: Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection during pregnancy can treat the health of mother and fetus. The present study was aimed to determine the prevalence of VZV IgG antibodies among pregnant women living in Yazd, Iran. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional, all pregnant women referred to Baghayipour clinic of Yazd city were participated. IgG Antibodies against VZV...

Abstract We report a case of varicella zoster virus (VZV)-associated anterior uveitis in patient with weight loss, arthritis and signs inflammatory bowel disease. Her clinical course included the development thalamic stroke secondary to VZV cerebral vasculopathy. Following antiviral therapy, patient’s neurologic symptoms recovered her ophthalmic findings improved.

BACKGROUND The objectives of this study were to evaluate the association between varicella-zoster virus (VZV)-specific humoral and cell-mediated immunity (CMI) to herpes zoster (HZ) and protection against HZ morbidity and to compare immune responses to HZ and zoster vaccine. METHODS In 981 elderly persons who developed HZ during a zoster vaccine efficacy trial (321 vaccinees and 660 placebo r...
