Acute inflammation of the gallbladder can occur without gallstones. Acalculous cholecystitis typically develops in critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. Patients on parenteral nutrition, with extensive burns, sepsis, major operations, multiple organ trauma or prolonged illness with multiple organ system failure are at risk for developing acalculous cholecystitis. The association o...

Although acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) accounts for less than 10% of acute cholecystitis in the adult population, gangrene and perforation are much more frequent compared to the usual cases of acute cholecystitis (calculus cholecystitis). However, spontaneous biliary-enteric fistula is well recognized in AAC, 90% of which are cholecystoduodenal fistula (CDF) though it is an uncommon diso...
We here report a case of a young, male patient who presented with jaundice and was diagnosed with acalculous cholecystitis during the course of a primary Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infection. The coexistence of cholestatic hepatitis and acalculous cholecystitis in patients with infectious mononucleosis is extremely uncommon and only few cases can be found in the literature. Moreover, almost one-f...
Tuberculosis of gallbladder is an extremely rare entity even in endemic region. Pre-operative diagnosis may not be possible and most of the cases are found incidentally during histopathological examination of resected specimen of gallbladder. We are presenting a case of tuberculosis of gallbladder presenting as acalculous cholecystitis in a middle aged female patient. We conclude that each gall...
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE To analyze patients with chronic acalculous cholecystitis over ten years, during which laparotomy was replaced by laparoscopy as the dominant operation for cholecystectomy in regard to patient demographics, diagnostic evaluations, follow-up symptoms, and additional operations. METHODS Of 7181 cholecystectomies from June 1985 to June 1995, 301 patients had chronic acal...
Q fever cholecystitis in an unvaccinated butcher diagnosed by gallbladder polymerase chain reaction.
Acalculous cholecystitis has been described in association with Q fever. We describe the first known case of Q fever cholecystitis diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction on gallbladder tissue. The presence of Coxiella burnetii genome in the diseased gallbladder tissue argues for direct involvement of the organism in the pathogenesis of Q fever cholecystitis.
During the course of acute viral hepatitis, some functional and anatomical changes to the gallbladder can occur. Acute acalculous cholecystitis (ACC) is a rare complication of acute hepatitis B virus infection; only few cases are reported as ACC associated with acute hepatitis B virus infection. ACC cases are self-limiting, while other limited cases can progress to a gangrenous state, perforati...
Eosinophilic cholecystitis is a rare form of cholecystitis. Histologically, it is characterized by a dense, transmural leukocyte infiltrate composed of more than 90% eosinophils. The etiology remains obscure, although it had been associated with allergies, parasites, hypereosinophilic syndromes, eosinophilic gastroenteritis, cholelithiasis, and acalculous cholecystitis. Here we report an eosino...
