JACKSON, DONALD C., AND HELENE SILVERBLATT. Respiration and acid-base status of turtles following experimental dives. Am. J. Physiol. 226(4) : 903-909. 1974.-Freshwater turtles Pseudemys scripta elegans were subjected to experimental dives lasting 24 h at 24°C. Respiratory minute volume and oxygen consumption were measured prior to and for 2-5 h following the dives. Arterial blood samples were ...

Optimal growth is only possible in a well-balanced "inner milieu". Premature infants are especially vulnerable for disturbances of acid-base metabolism with a predisposition to metabolic acidosis due to a transient disproportion between age-related low renal capacity for net acid excretion (NAE) and an unphysiologically high actual renal NAE on nutrition with standard formulas. During a 50 mont...

This volume is the publication of the proceedings of the symposium held in May of 1971. Most of the chapters are relatively brief contributions, often by major authorities. The topics discussed include the interaction between hemoglobin and oxygen, carbon dioxide, the red cell membrane, carbonic anhydrase, the regulation of intermediary metabolism of the red cell and of the oxygen affinity of h...

Determinations of the acid-base status of 10 adult Jamaican patients with sickle-cell anaemia during "painful crisis" and after recovery showed no evidence of metabolic acidosis in the former, in contrast to reports from elsewhere. These results could explain the failure of alkalis to abort or alter the acute painful episodes of most patients with sickle-cell anaemia.

This is not so much a proper review, in the sense of being a detailed survey of current experimental work, as it is a retrospective essay on the current status of the Lewis acid-base definitions as a systematizing tool in chemistry. Indeed, as the main concern is with the nature of the Lewis definitions themselves, their range of application, their limitations, the clarification of interpretive...

BACKGROUND Optimising the fluid resuscitation of patients with severe malaria is a simple and potentially cost-effective intervention. Current WHO guidelines recommend central venous pressure (CVP) guided, crystalloid based, resuscitation in adults. METHODS Prospectively collected haemodynamic data from intervention trials in Vietnamese adults with severe malaria were analysed retrospectively...

Umbilical venous pH, PCO2, PO2, and base excess was measured immediately before and after 72 intravascular transfusions in 34 fetuses with erythroblastosis fetalis. In 67 uncomplicated transfusions, infused adult blood led to a mean (95% confidence intervals) fall in pH (0.037, CI 0.029 to 0.044) and base excess (2.03, CI 1.61 to 2.45) and a mean rise in PCO2 (0.24 kPa, CI 0.13 to 0.35). These ...

The emerging threat of ocean acidifi cation for marine life has re-emphasised the crucial importance of acidbase status and regulation in whole organism functional maintenance and enantiostasis. pH values in different body compartments are widely accepted to play a key role in the maintenance of physiological function or their limitation under functional or environmental stress. pH affects prot...
