This article provides an overview of acute urinary retention (AUR), which can cause patients severe pain and distress. It examines potential causes and risk factors. The main strategies for the treatment and clinical management of patients are discussed. Nurses have a key role in identifying patients at risk of AUR. Therefore, the nursing role in assessment and management is explored.

Anterior sacral meningocoele is caused by a congenital hiatus in the anterior sacrum. We report a very rare case which presented as acute urinary retention. The common findings of anterior sacral meningocele include atypical low back pain, urological and gynaecological symptoms. Acute urinary retention as a presenting symptom does not appear to have been mentioned in the English literature.

Acute urinary retention secondary to vasculitic penile swelling in children is extremely rare. Henoch-Schönlein purpura is a self-limiting IgA-mediated cutaneous vasculitis, which can cause soft tissue edema. Acute urinary retention requires urgent intervention to prevent obstructive uropathy. Acute urinary retention in aseptic meningitis is rarely encountered, and the diagnosis of aseptic meningitis may be less than straightforward, because its symptoms and neurological signs are occasionally mild or absent. We report a case in which acute urinary retention provided an appropriate indication for the diagnosis of aseptic meningitis as the cause of an undiagnosed fever.
