Herbal medicines are widely used in many countries for the treatment of many diseases. Although the use of herb extracts as alternative medicine is growing, their toxicological properties have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we have investigated the effects of water and ethanol extracts of 18 herbs on the hepatic lipid metabolism and steatogenic hepatotoxicity. Ethanol extracts...

Foeniculum vulgare Mill., commonly called fennel, is a medicinal plant belonging to the Umbelliferae (Apiaceae) family, and is used in traditional medicine. Antibacterial peptides were isolated using sodium phosphate citrate buffer and, for extraction, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) buffer with pH 6, have been employed and antimicrobial activity tested against four reference strains. Th...

Two diglucoside stilbene trimers and a benzoisofuranone derivative were isolated from Foeniculum vulgare fruit together with nine known compounds. Their structures were elucidated by spectral methods including 1D, 2D NMR and MS and chemical methods. Antioxidant activity was tested using three methods: DPPH(), total antioxidant capacity and assay of lipid peroxidation.

Net photosynthesis rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate (E) of anise hyssop were measured during the four cloudless days, in reference to diurnal fluctuations of leaf temperature (Tleaf), leaf vapor pressure deficit (VPD leaf) and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) in well watered (WW), stressed (S) and recovered (R) plants. An analysis of measured data showed tha...

BACKGROUND The foraging choices of honey bees are influenced by many factors, such as floral aroma. The composition of volatile compounds influences the bioactivity of the aromatic plants and honey produced from them. In this study, Agastache rugosa was evaluated as part of a project to select the most promising medicinal plant species for production of bioactive honey. METHODS Headspace soli...
