BACKGROUND Protein crystallization is a slow process of trial and error and limits the amount of solved protein structures. Search of a universal heterogeneous nucleant is an effort to facilitate crystallizability of proteins. METHODOLOGY The effect of polystyrene nanospheres on protein crystallization were tested with three commercial proteins: lysozyme, xylanase, xylose isomerase, and with ...

Hollow polypyrrole (PPy) nanospheres with high sodium storage capacity as cathode materials for Na-ion batteries were reported. PPy hollow nanospheres demonstrated high current rate capacity and good cyclability. It was revealed by electrochemical testing and DFT calculation that the as-prepared PPy hollow nanospheres participate in reversible doping/de-doping reactions.

A novel application of surface-modified protein nanospheres as potential antiviral agents is illustrated. By using a single-step sonochemical process, bovine serum albumin nanospheres were generated, whose surface was covalently conjugated with mercaptoethane sulfonate to chemically and electrostatically mimic cellular heparan sulfate. The nanospheres effectively inhibited HSV-1 infection.

Introduction: In the 1960s, prior to the widespread use of TEMs, several papers described rounded, micron-sized organic particles from carbonaceous chondrite (CC) meteorites [1-3]. Some of these particles were hollow. Except for two early TEM studies [4, 5], the rounded structures were essentially neglected until similar material was discovered in the Tagish Lake meteorite [6]. We subsequently ...

Pullulan (PULL)/silver (Ag) nanoparticle composite nanospheres were prepared out of aqueous solutions using electrospray technique by controlling the concentration of PULL solution. Since pullulan is a water soluble and interesting natural polymer for many of its merits and good properties, it is one of the best materials for preparation of antibacterial material. Scanning electron microscopy (...

Inflammation plays a crucial role in rheumatoid arthritis progress. In the present work, a novel stealth polymeric nanospheres platform able to carry anti-inflammatory drugs and an imaging agent was developed. Incorporation of gold nanoparticles will allow photoacoustic imaging and near infra-red photothermal application. Through emulsion-diffusion evaporation technique methotrexate and gold na...

Calcium phosphate is the most important inorganic constituent of biological tissues, and synthetic calcium phosphate has been widely used as biomaterials. In this study, a facile method has been developed for the fabrication of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP)/polylactide-block-monomethoxy(polyethyleneglycol) hybrid nanoparticles and ACP porous nanospheres. Europium-doping is performed to enab...

Uniform SiO2@CdS mesoporous nanospheres with an average diameter of 300 nm have been synthesized successfully by a facile process. The as-prepared mesoporous composite nanospheres have a BET-specific surface area of 640 m(2) g(-1) and an average pore size of 2.82 nm. The results demonstrated that more than 60% Rhodamine B (RhB) dye in solution (4.8 mg L(-1), 50 mL) could be removed by adsorptio...
